It Wasn't Enough

This is a VERY short piece I did to deal with some tragedy going on in my life. I can also say it's my first fanfic of 2009; so woohoo or whatever. It's kinda a sad way to start a new year...
Darkness; that was all she saw as she fell from her steed. Darkness and blood. Her vision was flickering now as she heard the sounds of battle around her slowly fading to a dim murmur. The feeling of the blood all around her was registering only as a warm comfort against her cold skin. She just wanted it to be over. And then her mind filled with the image of a large white-haired laguz, and she smiled softly, feeling tears sliding down her cheeks. He would be alone.
She heard the stomping of large paws against the cold soil, and her vision flickered long enough for her to see the laguz bent over her, his large hands picking her up even more gently then usual. Tears were welling up in his eyes.
"…you, can't leave me…" He whispered.
Her eyes began to cloud over, but she fought it, wanting just a few more moments with him.
"Mordecai, I…love you…d-don't," She coughed, and blood splattered his face, "forget that…"
His eyes wondered to the arrows that filled her small body, and then back to her face.
"I will get you to a healer…you don't need to talk like you're going to…just don't waste your energy." He said, standing.
"M-Mordecai…don't…just wait here with me, won't you?" She managed out softly.
He looked back down at her and stopped walking, tears beginning to flow down his cheeks.
"I…love you…" He said roughly, his voice almost cracking.
She tried to reach a bloody hand to his face, but it fell limply back down. He grasped it, and pulled it to his face, the blood smearing his cheek. He kissed it, and she smiled.
"I'm…glad you aren't completely falling apart. I don't know if I could handle that…" She whispered, giving a soft laugh.
He gave a weak smile.
"I…promised I would protect you. It…wasn't enough…"
"No, it was…there's only so much anyone can do. I thought about this day coming…I think I'm ready…"
"You're so young! We…" He shook his head.
"I..know, Mordecai. I wanted to be with you after…after all this was over but…it's gonna be okay. You can still be happy."
"Never as happy as we could have been…" He managed out, the tears streaming now. He was clutching her tightly against him, feeling her fading slowly away.
"You'll find a great…laguz to…" She coughed and blood splattered his face again, now heavier and dribbling down her chin, "To be with…"
"I love you…" He whispered, and clutched her hand tightly.
"I…l-love you…too…" She managed with a smile, clutching his large hand as well as she could.
Her eyes were clouding over again, and this time she didn't fight it. She had said what she had needed to say. He felt her hand completely limp in his now, and the tears were heavy, the tiger closing his eyes and sobbing, clutching the girl against him.
"M-Mist…" He whispered.
His protection…it just wasn't enough…
