Roy Mustang was lucky, considering the situation. His whole team had survived the Promised Day. Even more lucky, that Riza had. He loved everyone on his team, don't doubt that, but Riza held a different type of love with him. With her, everything she did was right. Anything she said made him happy, even when she was yelling at him. Riza was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his whole life, but that was taken from him. He could still talk to her, touch her, smell her. But he couldn't see her, and Roy needed to see her. He missed her dark brown eyes, her hair reminded him of the sunshine. But all he saw now was darkness. Her image fading farther and farther away as the days pass. He wasn't sure how much longed he would be able to make it without seeing her, or anything for that matter. Roy had to be patient, though. Patient for Jean Havoc to show up so he could get his legs fixed, which Roy felt fully responsible for.
After Jean had made it to Central, he went straight to the hospital. Rebecca had picked him up from the train station. He was nervous, as one would be, but excited. Excited for a new chance at life, excited that he might be able to join all of his best friends again at his favorite jobs he's had. Dr. Marcoh healed Havoc like it was nothing. "Mustang, are you ready?" He asked, even though he knew the answer. Everyone had been sent out of the room, everyone except for Riza. She needed to be the first thing he saw again. And after a few moments of a burning sensation, he opened his eyes. Everything was a little blurry, but he saw her. Her hair, her eyes, her smile.. Roy loved her smile. It was beautiful.
The next thing Roy saw was Jean Havoc, walking on his own two legs into the room towards him, like nothing had ever happened. Roy couldn't stop himself from smiling. He was happy.
Dr. Marcoh had told Roy and his team that the philosopher stone needed to be kept safe, and that he trusted only them with it. He knew they wouldn't use it for power, but only for good. Marcoh had a chain, and connected the stone to it to make a necklace, giving it to the colonel. He trusted him with something very important. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. And a test this will be. Don't let the power consume you." He left. Since when did Marcoh get so meaningful?
Roy Mustang was scared. He hadn't known why he had been so angry lately, but he couldn't help it. He snapped at every little thing, even Riza. "Do your paper work, sir." Snap. He had to go back and forth in his mind, telling himself she was just trying to help and wanted what was best for him. He also kept telling himself that she was a whiney bitch who just liked to make his life harder than it already was, which was wrong. He knew she wasn't what made his life hard, she made it better.
He hadn't realized how late it had become. Everyone had left, everyone but her. Riza stood in front of him. "Sir, can I talk to you?" He looked up at her, and only nodded. "Okay, well, no offense, sir, but you've been kind of short lately and we were all wondering if you were okay? I mean, we're all worried about you, I'm worried about you..." She trailed off, realizing she was getting really personal. He just laughed.
"I'm fine, Lieutenant. Please, don't worry about me. I've just been tired lately, and since my eyes have been restored, I've been getting headaches. I'm fine, really. You should go home and get some rest, I will see you tomorrow." And with that, he got up and walked out.
The next few weeks had gone by better, he was still getting headaches though. Once they had made it to Ishval, he was able to control himself better. He didn't know what it was, but he was calmer. Maybe he just didn't want to scare the people of Ishval more than he already did. Anytime he was angry, though, he decided to take it out on Hawkeye. He wasn't sure why, and he hated himself for it.
This was the first time Rebecca had been around the whole Mustang team (all except for Falman) for more than a day at a time during work hours. They were all sitting at a table in their makeshift headquarters in Ishval, eating lunch. Riza was sitting across from Roy, next to Rebecca. They were all talking about their family back home, and someone had asked Riza about hers. When she told them she didn't have any, something in Roy snapped. "Hawkeye, stop trying to make people feel bad for you just because your dad was an abusive alcoholic that died, you should be happy he's gone." Right after he spoke, Roy smacked himself in the face. He didn't know where that came from and why he said it.
The table got silent, and everyone was just looking at the two, who were just looking at each other. Nobody had ever seen Riza so shocked. She just silently stood up, and walked out of the room. Roy whispered a 'shit' under his breath before standing. Rebecca stood, blocking his was. "Are you fucking serious right now? Did you really just say that to her?" After speaking, she ran out of the room after her best friend.
Roy Mustang was an idiot.
