One of the adults who helps with our youth group was asked to share her brother's story--her brother who died of cancer at the age of 27. It was a powerful story, and she shared this poem with us, and now I want to share it with you guys.

During her story, I was thinking of my grandmother, who had lung cancer this winter and is now dealing with a brain tumor. We know she's going Home soon--same as my neighbor did in October--and all that we can pray for is a quick, painless death when she does go Home.

I don't own the poem, I just loved it. It was given to our friends' family by Hospice. I just wrote it down on April 20th, 2007, the day after it was read to our group.

Letting Go

The angels gathered near your bed
So very close to you
Where they knew all of the things
That you were going through.

I thought about so many things
I tightly held your hand.
How I wished that you were strong
And healthy once again.

But your eyes were looking Homeward
To a place beyond the sky
Where God will hold you always.
It was time to say "Goodbye."

I struggled with my selfish thoughts
For I wanted you to stay
So we could walk and talk again
Like we did just yesterday.

But God still knows what's best
And I knew He loved you so.
So I gave to you life's greatest gift
The gift of letting go.

Pretty poem...
