I could hear the hiss of the hypospray more than I felt the usual sting that went with it. I could feel the pain of my injures from my battle against Khan start to fade away. Doctor McCoy hadn't been pleased when I had showed up beaten and bruised. But I had showed up with the man that could save the Captain, so that had staved off the brunt of his fury. He had administered the hypospray, and then it all went dark.
I opened my eyes and found that I wasn't in the Enterprises medical bay. I was in a large, white room, and I seemed to be the only occupant. I got to my feet and surveyed the area. There was nothing but white as far as I could see. I surveyed myself, and found that the injuries that I had acquired in my battle with Khan where gone. Fascinating. "Spock?" Came a familiar voice. I turned towards the source and saw Jim walking towards me. When he was in arms-length if me, I observed that all traces of him going into the warp-core were gone, like he had never gone in to it at all. "Captain?" I asked, not believing what was in front of me. "Yes Spock?" "May I ask an inquiry?" "Of course Spock." "Where are we Captain?" He looked around, as if seeing the room for the first time. "I've been trying to figure that one out myself. One minute I was in the warp-core chamber, the next, I wake up here. But the more important question is, what are you doing here?" "I was coming to Doctor McCoy with the man that he hoped could save you, but I was injured in the process of subduing him. Then the good doctor administered a hypospray and it all went dark." "And you woke up here." Jim finished. "Yes Captain"
"You can't stay here, you know that right?" I raised a questioning eyebrow. "What is your meaning Captain?" "It's Jim, Spock" He said good-naturally, then he turned serious and said, "I died. The only reason you can see me is that you're either dead or dying. Judging by your story, I would settle on the latter, so you have a choice. You can either move on, or go back. "Have you chosen?" I asked, "Yes. I'll be coming back. It might be awhile, but I will come back." I held an illogical feeling of relief and said, "Then as First Officer, I must accompany you." Jim laughed and smiled a radiant smile. "Quite logical Mr. Spock." He quipped. I observed the dimming of the room, and the figure of Jim start to fade. I must have illogically shown some unease when Jim said, "It's ok Spock. You're going back. Tell Bones it'll work, and that he'll have his favorite patient back before he knows it." He raised his hand in farewell, and everything went black.
I came to awareness slowly. I could hear a voice, but could not determine clearly what was being said. The voice was male, and sounded concerned. "-leepy head. Come on, wake up." The male calling to me sounded like Jim. Was he back already? "Spock!" I opened my eyes and inquired, "Jim?" "No Spock, it's me." The figure came into view, and I saw the familiar face of Doctor McCoy. "Spock, what happened? You flatlined for two minutes!" "Jim will be alright. It will work." The doctor looked confused, and said, "What?" "I know because I spoke with him." The good doctor looked…shocked. Yes, that was the word, as he said, "hold on Spock. Are we talking about a clinical near-death experience?" He looked alarmed, how illogical. "I believe so Doctor." Doctor McCoy gave me a long, searching look, then shook his head. "What is it Doctor? " I inquired. "Nothing Spock." He replied. He moved closer and administered another hypospray. As oblivion claimed me, I had one last illogical thought. Would I see the Capt-no, Jim, again? I would soon have my answer as oblivion took me.
