Summary: Sometimes Neal wishes he Never met Peter.

Rating: T for the angst.

Enjoy

Neal Caffrey was a conman. He stolen from people, he lied to people (while smiling), and convinced every person he was a good man. There was only one person who saw through his lies and consequently the only person Neal trusts. His name is Peter Burke and an FBI agent. He also happened to be the only person to catch him … twice.

Sometimes Neal thinks that Peter really doesn't see through his lies. That Peter really does think that he is fine when he is really on the verge of breaking. That Peter does think that he is a good man (even though he isn't.)

Sometimes Neal thinks that Peter asks too much of him. He asks Neal to sacrifice his life to something he doesn't believe in. He asks Neal to share his past with him even though no one is supposed to know. Not Mozzie, not Alex, not Elizabeth, not even Kate. No one. Peter asks for trust. It's something Neal has not given since his mother. He gives some of it but never all. Peter has come the closest of getting all of his trust.

Sometimes Neal thinks that Peter is a hypocrite. He tells Neal to trust him but never trusts Neal. Peter never allows him to visit a museum of art or an art gallery, even though Neal promises he would never steal anything. He always has to go with an agent or with Peter himself. Neal guesses that Peter will never truly trust a conman. Peter tells Neal to stop being a conman. He says to either be a con or a man. But then he asks Neal to con the conmen. He puts Neal undercover to spread lies and deceit. Neal wonders how to stop conning people when it was all he ever seemed to do.

Sometimes Neal wishes that he never met Peter. That he never heard of The Music Box. He wishes he was with Kate, his beautiful Kate, living the life they always wanted. They would be in France or Italy seeing the sights, looking (not stealing) at art in museums, living life, their life. But Kate is dead, burned alive, and Peter is still here, Peter who tells him to be honest.

But Neal Caffrey is a conman. He steals from people, he lies to people (while smiling), and convinces every person he meets that he is a good man. And there is only one person who sees through his lies (so Neal thinks.) And Peter is the only person that Neal trusts (though he's not so sure anymore.) And Neal, for the life of him, wishes he didn't because Peter doesn't see through his lies. Because Peter asks too much of him. Because Peter is a hypocrite. Because Neal sometimes whishes he never met Peter. And because Neal feels that he trusts Peter a little too much and if Peter suddenly decides to leave Neal is not sure he will survive the sudden fall.

The End.
