A Birthday to remember
Carter's POV
It was her birthday. It was her birthday.
"That is enough, head. That is the four hundred and thirty seventh time you have reminded me in the last hour." I muttered to myself. It was Zia's birthday. A year had passed since she had told me that she was not sure about her feelings. She was here, under the special request of Amos. He said she should at least celebrate one birthday with kids her own age before the end of the world. Or so he said. I swear I saw him wink at me when I opened the door at the mansion without a clue that I would find my crush standing there. Something was different about Zia. She always blushed crimson whenever we were in the same room. But even though she did this she showed no feelings for me. Everything was…formal between us. But I, the great lovesick, Carter Kane, am planning to turn the situation around. There was a party tonight and I was planning to tell my love for her again. This was going on in my mind when I passed her in the corridor.
Zia's POV
I was walking to my room when. I passed carter in the corridor. As soon as I saw him I felt my cheeks getting hotter. What in the world was wrong with me? Why was I acting like this? He smiled at me and I politely smiled back. But inside my heartbeat rose…. Why? I walked past him and entered my room.
Carter's POV
Everything was set. I would ask her to dance and after we had our first dance I would kiss her. This is where my plan went boom. Either she would kiss me back and accept my love. Or either she would freakin blast me off the face of the earth. Hopefully it would be the first as the second one would hurt.
…
It was party time… and then before my plan even started it went boom. It started raining. And Zia hated water. You will too if you slept a year in it. So as I was saying it started raining and everybody went inside and I saw Zia sitting alone in a corner, away from a window, her hands around her head and I saw a tear make its way down her perfect cheek. I don't know where I got the strength from but I walked up to her. I would make her remember this birthday.
Zia's POV
Carter walked up to me and he placed a hand on my chin and lifted my face. He wiped my tear.
"Let's not keep something which does not belong here." He whispered and suddenly I blushed. He got up and held out his hand.
Do you trust me?" he asked. I nodded and took his hand. He led me up to the terrace. But I let his hand go when he stepped out into the rain. I was afraid.
Carter's POV
Zia let my hand go. I turned around and saw that she was afraid to move further. I went back to her and held out both my hands.
"Zia, it is just water. Trust me."
"But carter…I….I am afraid."
"Whatever happens, Zia? I will protect you." She took my hands pulled her into the rain and a second later she hugged me and cried.
"Hey, hey. Don't cry look you are making rain fall in my eyes." I was silently crying that I could not help her, that I could not make her fear go away. And as soon as I said that she looked up and gave me a watery smile.
"Dance with me." I whispered. And we danced. And I could feel Zia's fear leave. We stood in the rain hugging each other.
"I want to tell you…" we both said at the same time.
"You first." I told her.
"I love you." she whispered.
"And I love you more." I whispered back. We looked into each other's eyes and we felt our souls merge. We had always loved each other. It had just taken time to figure it out. And we kissed. Fireworks exploded in my head. It was a birthday she would remember. I was sure of that.
