Close Call
by Tomy

"Kitt, I lost the brakes!"

The panicked call caught me completely off guard. I had been scanning the various vehicles and equipment looking for any sign of evidence into who might have killed Craig Noble, not figuring that Michael would find any trouble amongst this crowd of people.

"Hold on, Michael."

Scanning quickly to find them, fear gripped my systems as I locked onto the speeding car. Gunning the engine I started after them, praying I'd be in time. Ignoring everything else around me.

How many times have I berated Michael for his reckless driving? Watching him now, as he somehow managed to keep the little car from going over the cliff edge, I swore I'd never say another word about it. As I sped after them, I began to realize how much we counted on Bonnie's expertise; how the Trans Am never faltered. How I despised the idea of Michael driving another car.

Skittering on the road, I had to slow down somewhat. If I went over the cliff edge, there would be no one to help them. The little car continued to speed down the winding mountain road, Michael struggling to slow it and failing miserably against the effects of gravity.

"Stay with it, Michael. Five more seconds." I tried to keep him thinking with my tone, trying to keep myself thinking.

I watched as Michael glanced in the rear view, a mixture of fear and relief in his eyes as he fought to keep the tiny car under control. Scanning the dangerous curve not a mile down the road, I hurried to calculate the jump.

Turbo boosting over, Michael watched me as I flew over them while Stevie ducked. I hadn't realized how strong his trust in me was.

Matching the speed of the vehicle Michael and Stevie were in, I began to slow. The front bumper of the other car hit my taillights a couple of times before I had a solid connection. Scanning ahead again, noticing how much time I had wasted, I applied the brakes. At this speed, Michael most likely would not have been able to control the sway of the car around the next hairpin turn.

Bringing us to a somewhat sudden halt, I observe the occupants in the car behind. Michael is staring at me, trying to breathe normally. I scan them both, concerned. Neither of them are injured, as I had suspected, but the look on Michael's face as he asks me to check the vehicle....

I already know what went wrong, I knew the first time I scanned the yellow vehicle. It angered me to no end. They had tampered with the car and I hadn't thought to scan it before Michael hit the ignition. It was a mistake I would never make again.
