"Oi! Evans!"
James called out, though futilely, across the entrance hall to the red-headed girl. Unfortunately, she never turned to meet his gaze. James figured she either knew it was him and didn't bother to handle a confrontation or that she couldn't hear him at all. The hall was very crowded, after all. Yes, that was why, he concluded.
"Prongs," James heard his best friend say somewhere to his right, "When are you ever going to let it go?"
"Let go of what?" James said without looking at Sirius, as he continued to follow Lily Evans with his eyes. She was heading outside with the other girls in their year. Once she was out of his sight, he finally turned to Sirius, completely oblivious. "I'm sorry, Padfoot, what were you on about?"
Sirius rolled his eyes. "You see, that's what I'm talking about."
James stood in utter confusion. "If you don't plan on enlightening me anytime soon, Sirius, can we go outside, please?" He was rather annoyed at his best friend's ambiguity.
Sirius sighed, stretched his arm around James's shoulder, and led the two of them to the grounds. "You've lost it completely, mate."
James stopped and shooed Sirius's arm away. "What're you getting at?"
"All right, James," Sirius surrendered. "How long have you been fawning over Evans?"
"Er, I'm not sure. Why?"
"Right then, we'll assume that it's been a while now. – How many times have you asked her out and she rejected you?"
James had a feeling that Sirius was slowly getting to his point. "Er, I don't know."
"You don't know. Now," Sirius changed his tone as though he were explaining something complex to a four year-old, "don't you reckon that she doesn't want to go out with you at all?"
James sighed. "Yeah, I know, Sirius. I just can't help it."
Sirius smiled affectionately. "I know you can't."
James continued. "I don't know what it is. Sure, I act like a git whenever she's around," (Sirius nodded his head enthusiastically), "Something triggers in my head, I suppose… You understand, right?"
"No, Prongs, I really don't," Sirius chuckled. "I think I know where you're coming from, but will I ever understand it? Probably not."
Both of them again started walking to their normal spot under the tree, where they could make out the figures of Remus and Peter. Along the way James had to ask, "Haven't you ever felt something like this? About a girl?"
"A girl?" Sirius asked. "What's that?"
They both laughed, and as they sat under the tree, the four of them talked of things other than girls and unknown feelings.
