Frodo was walking outside near the Gamgee hole searching for Sam. He saw hobbits scurrying about trying to get the place ready for Sam and Rosie's wedding. Many of the hobbits were talking excitedly. In spite of the excitement around him, Frodo was depressed. He knew he had to find Sam and tell him he wasn't fit to be Sam's best man. Not too far away he saw Sam talking to one of the hobbits.
He walked over to Sam and said to him, "I need to speak to you."
"Excuse us for a few minutes," he told the other hobbit.
They walked off to a place where nobody will bother them. Sam noticed Frodo's sad faced and asked, "what's wrong Mr. Frodo?"
"Sam", Frodo said slowly, "I can't be your best man. Maybe you can ask Pippin or Merry"
"Why not?" Sam asked looking surprised and disappointed.
"Well you see Sam, I don't deserve to be the best man at your wedding."
"You're my friend, of course you deserve to be my best man."
"No, I don't deserve to be your best man and I don't deserve your friendship.
Infact, I don't deserve Pippins, Aragorn's, Gandalf, or anybody else's friendship either."
"That's not true sir," Sam said with feeling. "You deserve everybody's friendship."
"Sam how could you say that, you saw how I acted on the quest. I snapped at you many times. I accused you of being a thief and sent you away. Worst of all I claimed the ring."
"I don't understand why you stuck with me."
With tears in his eyes Sam said, "Frodo dear, I stuck with you because I love you. You are like a brother to me. You always treated me well while I was growing up. You couldn't help doing the things you did at the quest. The ring was controlling you, and Gollum was deceiving you. I don't want Pippin or Merry or anybody else to be my best man only you. You deserve my best friendship and to be my best man more than anybody else. You carried the ring to destroy it. You were brave."
Sam couldn't talk anymore. He looked at Frodo and hugged him to himself tightly.
After he let go, Frodo felt much better.
"Do you still want to be my best man?"
"Of course."
Frodo and Sam walked back to the wedding area.
