Caroline arrived in a very distracting fashion. All she remembered where the swirls of colors and lights around her vision before she landed on the lap of the most gorgeous-looking boy she'd ever seen.
Blue eyes widened at her underneath a dark fringe before she promptly deposited her lunch on his shoes.
Vampires weren't treated very kindly in Hecate. In fact, she was the only vampire around but her new status as a time traveler was too delicate a thing and they decided to send her to the school for delinquents. She hated it already but when James was around it wasn't so bad.
He was sweet and nice and charming and very, very handsome. He always treated her like she was someone important and she liked that.
Falling in love was out of the question though. She needed to get home.
He looked solemn one evening, eyes downcast during dinner and not responding to her questions. She was so worried about him she followed him after dinner and watched him cry inside an empty classroom.
"What happened?" She asked one of James' friends.
Conor just shook his head and answered. "His mom killed his dad the other day. She's a demon, you know and so is James."
A demon? She had some questions that needed to be answered.
Time travel, demons and pretty boys a confused Caroline make.
On one hand, she wanted to go home badly. She missed her mom and her friends.
And on the other, she'd gotten used to Hecate and James and all his friends.
And he was hurting so badly, she knew it wouldn't be long before she had to intervene and save him from himself.
She stared at the dark glass in his hands – demon glass- and reached forward to stop him.
"Please…" She pleaded. "Don't do this."
"I have to," He said. "Before I lose it too. I can't….I can't…"
She moved closer to him and took the glass from his hands throwing it to the ground as he began to shake.
"It's okay, it's okay…" She whispered to him as she cradled him in her arms.
He sobbed for what felt like hours. And they ended the night with him walking her to her dorm, he kissed her cheek in goodbye and she blushed red like a bright red cherry.
He kissed her two days later. She's telling him some story about her roommate and he's not listening , eyes on her lips. He kissed her without warning, just smacked his lips against hers and she's left breathless.
"I love you, Caroline," He said afterwards, tucking stray curls of her hair behind her ears.
She said it back without hesitation.
Caroline was visited with the same swirl of colors and lights in her vision before she steadied and she found herself back in her room. She took it all in for a full minute before she burst into tears.
She would never see James again and she knew it.
