Flik sat up in bed. A slight breeze had collected outside and a chill was forming in his bones. He looked down at his bare body and then over at his lover. She must have been aware of the cold somewhere in her sub conscious because in her sleep she had taken his half of the blankets.
He smiled to himself a bit. She always was the forceful type. Take charge, and all that. And apparently the same applied with blankets. It was no matter anyway the sun was peeking up over the horizon and he knew that he had best leave the room now before anyone else woke up.
She told him that they needed to keep it a secret. That no one else would understand. And as much as he understood it he resented it a little. Why shouldn't he tell anyone? Why couldn't he scream it out to all who would listen? Why was she so afraid of what the others would say?
He pushed the thought away as he snuck down the hall and into his own chambers. Moving quietly was a skill he had picked up along his travels. Being a warrior wasn't all brute and strength like he had assumed when he was a child. There were many other skills involved.
A twinge of guilt slapped him in the face as he thought of his journey and how worried his mother must be. He should have been back months ago. But Odessa had caught him up in things he couldn't walk away from. Things like her for example. He thought about her again and the past night. They had made love and he held her until he woke. Smelling her hair and hoping that morning never came. But it did. As it always does.
And he resented that too. It seemed to him that night times were when they could be together and as soon as the sun came up it was back to business. He wished that they could run away together. Move to Muse City, or even a nice town like Iksay in Zexen. But the one time he felt it the right time to suggest it she laughed at him. She had thought he was kidding and he never told her other wise.
He had always assumed that he would be a great warrior like his father was before him. But since he met Odessa the thought alone seemed impossible. All he wanted now was to run away and never look back.
He sat on the edge of his bed for a moment. Odessa would be leaving today with Tir McDohl to go and retrieve blue prints for a weapon she called a fire spear. He wasn't really sure what it was or what exactly it did but it was made by the dwarves and they weren't big on having confusing names for things. He figured that it was just that. A spear that in some way made fire.
He wondered if he should tell her today that he loved her. He had never said it to her before. And it had never occurred to him either. But something pulled at him. And he thought somewhere deep in his heart that he needed to tell her before she left with Tir....
