A/N: Why Jack could not bring himself to stab the heart. Drabble, J/E.

A Heart To Give
By: Sinnamon Spider

Jones whirled, tentacles whipping through the air, and plunged the sword into Will's chest.

Jack gaped, one hand clutching his broken sword, the other gripping the slimy heart. To his right, Elizabeth let out a little shriek. Will gasped, arching upward. Jones twisted the sword viciously before stepping away, leaving the weapon speared in Will's body. Then he turned to smirk at Jack, laughing that sharp, cruel laugh.

As Elizabeth collapsed onto the deck next to her fading husband, Jack stared in consternation from the heart in his hand to the man – the friend – who lay dying on the deck. He gritted his teeth, plunging the sword toward the heart but stopping just short at the sound of Elizabeth's voice.

"Look at me - stay with me! You're all right!"

The fear and terror and pain in her voice struck him hollowly in the chest. And suddenly he knew what to do.

Dropping to his knees beside Will, he wrapped the dying man's hand around the hilt of the broken sword. Will tore his eyes from Elizabeth to stare at Jack, who nodded grimly, dropping the heart onto the deck.

Jack stabbed the heart, pulling Will's hand with his, making the only decision he had available.

Because Jack didn't have a heart to give to the Flying Dutchman.

He had already given it to Elizabeth Swann.
