------
Day Of Origin
------
Abby sat with her knees hugged tightly against her chest. She was drowsing through some old
medical drama. They had everything wrong, but really, what did it matter? All the patients
survived any ways. Abby was feeling very dejected, she might even go as far as saying she felt
unloved. No, she would stick with dejected, after all, this wasn't the first time her birthday had
been forgotten. But this is the first time she's had friends forget, it had always been her mother,
never friends.
On this day, her day of beginning, her day of origin, her birthday, her best friend had even
overlooked it. Was she wallowing in self-pity? Hell, yea. But she had all the right to. As far as she
was concerned, a forgotten birthday was more than enough reason to wallow. She was going to
milk this for all she could. She was going to at least get a good self-pity festival out of this.
------
"Dr. Carter, Dr. Carter, CARTER!"
"Wha- wha- I'm up, I'm up!"
"6 o'clock, you're off."
"Uh, thanks Haleh." Carter rolled over and reached for his stethoscope and in the process
knocking down a few dozen instruments. His eyes darted to the little green numbers that read
02/03.
Oh, damn, damn, DAMN!
He had forgotten her birthday!
------
The phone rang just after ten.
"Hi Abby, it's your mother. Happy birthday Abby!"
"Hi mom, thanks, I thought you had forgotten." Abby chuckled, at least someone had
remembered, even though it wasn't who she had wanted, she had wanted someone notably male.
After a short uncomfortable conversation Abby hung up the phone with a sigh. She never will be
totally comfortable talking with her mother again, she thought sadly.
Soon after, the phone rang shrilly again, "What did you forget?" Abby asked suspecting her
mother again.
"Oh, Abby, I didn't forget completely... not exactly. I worked three shifts in a row... I lost
track of time" It was Carter, and from the slight static, she could tell he was on his cell
phone. "I thought today was the 2nd."
"Carter, didn't you use that same excuse for Christmas and Easter?" Abby laughed, happy he had
remembered, even if he was a little late.
"Can I come in?"
"Are you outside my door?"
"I was trying to call you on the way... but you must have been on the phone. I'm just coming in
your building. Huh, there's a guy down here looking me over, I think he thinks I'm hot."
"Is he a tall brunette?" Abby asked laughing.
"No.. uh.. he's got spiked colorful hair...and he's quite short." Carter said with a touch of
disgust in his voice. "Why do kids do that? They actually think it looks good?" He suddenly
lowered his voice to a whisper, "Uh oh, I think he heard me."
"Oh Carter, that's only Peter, he's harmless, he's probably just sizing you up, he's quite
territorial."
"Oh great, a territorial rainbow-mohawked teenager, just what I need. I'm here."
Abby heard the the soft rap-rap-rap a second later. She walked over to the door and opened it
to a distinctly male friend.
"I knew it was you."
Carter chuckled dryly, "I brought you a present." Holding out three bags of take-out.
"Ahh, my favorite, how did you know?"
Carter just shrugged.
Ahh... Happy Birthday indeed.
