I was on the subway in New York City. Surrounded by people going about their daily business. But not me. No, I was looking for my long lost mother who left me on the step of a church at birth.
I was a long way from home, by home I mean the orphanage I grew up in. Back in London the kids I spent my childhood with were mean, really mean. They would pull my long dark hair and pinch my pale skin. God knows I wanted to actually kill them.
Now that I'm 16, I was able to leave that dreaded place and search for my mother. I had barely any information but enough to go on. I knew she lived in New York and married to some rich guy who worked in business.
Anyways, as I got off the subway and onto the street I stopped right in my tracks, as did everyone else. Police cars, helicopters, guns - everywhere.
What. On. Earth.
Suddenly, I heard the sound of smashing glass from a building above me. A man with crazy curly hair burst out of a window, causing the glass to be dashed and divided like a million stars in the night sky. "Ahh!" People around me were screaming. When it seemed like he was about to fall to his death, he shot this crazy spider man thing out of this device in his hand and it attached to the building opposite. He swung himself onto the roof and ran.
Despite all the bullets that were being shot at him, he managed to survive - as did a girl with bright red hair and two other guys, one with black hair (just like mine) and one with blonde hair who did that swingy-thing just like him.
5 days after that mad event, I found myself with no money - like, none. Not only that, but I had no idea where I was - I think it was the outskirts of the city, where ever I was, there was no one else about. I thought I would have met my mum by now and so I didn't bring much money, well, I didn't exactly have much money in the first place. So, the only thing to do was get a job. The next day, I was walking past a grubby old train station and noticed a sign that said:
JOB AVAILABLE
$25 PER HOUR
STARTS JUNE 16TH
Wow, that was good money, and June 16th - that was tomorrow! I immediately swung open the door and saw the dirty waiting room where people booked there tickets. It was covered in dust - COVERED. But beneath that, I could see black and white tiles that covered the floor and a high ceiling with a magnificent piece of art painted on it - angels and harps; only most of it was covered in cracks.
"Can I help you?" an ancient voice spoke. I snapped back to reality and saw a woman who looked as if she too, was covered in the dust. She had a sea of grey-white hair and earrings that looked like mini voodoo dolls, I couldn't really see though, she was standing at the opposite end of the room behind a mahogany desk. "Er, yes. I'm, er, I saw the job thing outside, on, on the window?" This woman spooked me out. "And?" She asked, her dark eyes filling with curiosity. "Well, I, er, I would like the job, if it's still going," she remained seated for a moment then stood up and said to me. "You start tomorrow,"
"Oh, thanks," I said. She didn't say anything in return, so I turned around and walked out. But as I was doing so, I couldn't help but feel as if her eyes were burning into my skin...
