Of course, neither did several other students...
Scott - for his remaining living family, aka Alex, was in Hawaii and had a family there, anyways.
Kurt - because his biological family was Mystique - enough said - and his family in Germany was...well, in Germany.
Rogue - because her adoptive mother was Mystique and Kurt was at the Institute, too, so she didn't feel so alone.
Kitty - because her parents were now dead, and she had no siblings.
The odd thing about Jean was, the others always thought, was that she actually had family. Jean explained it one morning, a few days before Christmas after the others who had them had left for their respective homes. Yes, she had a family, true. And, yes, they were alive, thank god. But...
And she fell silent for a moment, anger and pain sparking across the red heads' face. But they didn't recognize that she was a mutant. Oh, it wasn't as if it was a secret - how could it be, with a power like hers, and everything in the news? No, they just skirted around the fact and talked about it behind closed doors, if they ever did talk about it. Most of the rest of the Grey family thought that Jean was a little...off in the head or some such thing.
Scott had frowned at this news, his face turning stony with anger. How could they turn a blind eye to something so huge in their daughter's life?
Kurt had bit his lip and stared at the table top, not wanting to touch her - contact was still awkward for him - and he was unsure of what to say - and thankful that his family knew and acknowledged his mutation, for all that they lived several countries away, or were evil.
Rogue offered Jean her coffee, in a silent gesture of comfort and, if not understanding, at least sympathy.
Kitty hugged Jean with one arm around her shoulder, and the phycic smiled, touched by their thoughts, although they hadn't voiced them.
