I was exhausted. I guess from all the medicine they were giving me for the pain.

I heard people talking. I couldn't tell who they were.

I opened my eyes a little. My lids were heavy and the light hurt my eyes, but I had to find that familiar voice.

There he was, sitting on a chair at the foot of my bed. He was looking away from me, at a nurse. Oh great, he came to visit me so he could flirt with the nurses!

But then I saw he was frowning.

I looked at the nurse, she was holding a small vase of pink carnations in her left hand. In her right, yellow tulips with white specks. My favorite.

The nurse made a move to set the carnations beside my bed. My hearing wasn't the best but I heard him.

"Wait, he doesn't like carnations. Put the tulips next to the bed. They're his favorites." His lips turned up.

The nurse eyed him, no doubt intrigued by the fact that he knew what I liked and disliked. Even though we'd only spoken about flowers a couple of times. But she didn't know that.

She put the carnations in the corner. He stood up and took the tulips from her. He shook and fluffed them, to create a ruffled appearance. Just the way I described to him.

I managed to open my eyes fully. My lids weighed ten pounds each. My lips curved up into the largest smile I could manage as I saw Ponyboy hovering over me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the artificially ruffled tulips by my bed, they were wafting a pleasant smell to my nose.

"What happened?" I said, my voice sounded weaker than I'd imagined.

"Don't worry about that, right now." He said gently.

"Am I gonna be okay?" I asked, afraid of the answer.

"Of course!" Ponyboy said, his eyes sparkling as they bored into mine. "You're gonna be home with us before you know it."

"With you?" I asked, confused.

"Yeah, Johnnycake. You're going home. With me."

It's win-win.
