Author's Note: So this is just a little ficlet, I guess, set after On the Head of a Pin (I did write it right after it aired, I'm just a bit late with actually posting it). Literally, it picks up from that tear trickling down Dean's cheek in the hospital at the end of the episode. Dean was all messed up and seemed really vulnerable in the hospital, very unlike Dean, and that inspired this.
Something Worth Fighting For
"Do they know?" Dean wiped away the stray tear.
"About?"
"About us, Cas. Do the others know about us?" Dean asked, voice hoarse.
Castiel looked at him. He was covered in bruises and wounds. It killed him to see Dean like this, knowing that it was his fault. He should've been in the room, making sure nothing went wrong. He…felt guilty.
"No, the angels don't know about us."
"Make sure they don't. You can't give them another reason to make you fall."
"I was speaking to Anna earlier," Castiel said.
"Anna?" Dean's brow furrowed.
"Yes, she came to see me. I believe she wants me to fall."
Dean sat up and grabbed Castiel's hand. "You cannot fall, Cas. I can't do this without you." He started coughing, his weak body reacting to the sudden movement. Cas sat on the edge of the bed and gently pushed Dean back onto his bed.
"I'm not going anywhere." He used his free hand to cup Dean's cheek. "And I thought you just said that you couldn't do it; that I'd have to find someone else."
"I don't think I can do it, Cas. I still think the world is screwed. I'm not gonna win against fucking Lucifer…but I sure as hell can't sit on my ass and wait to die. I'm going down fighting." Dean said, "That's why I need you, Cas. If I fight, I need something worth fighting for."
"I'm not worth—" Castiel started.
"Yes," Dean cut him off, "Yes, you are."
The angel leaned forward and kissed the hunter. He felt joy. He felt pride. He felt loved. It all scared Castiel, but as soon as his lips touched Dean's, it no longer seemed to matter. He was something worth fighting for.
