Hermione Granger pushes her hair over her shoulders. She put some of her hair on one side of her head, twisting and twirling the strands, trying to find the best style. She braids it but quickly decides she doesn't like how it looks. She feels like it indicates she's trying too hard and girls who try too hard don't make friends.

She hears the tick-tock of the clock in her room, and she knows she's running out of time. She goes to her trunk that sits on the end of her bed and opens it, looking inside. She sticks her hand in it, moving everything around and checking that she isn't forgetting something important, something that her parents will not be able to simply mail to her.

Nothing seems out of place.

She looks around her room, and everything seems ready.

She smiles wildly and spins around her room. She should try to read some of her textbooks, but she has already ready her whole Potions and Transfiguration books, and she's already at least halfway through the others. She'll read some more on the train.

She wonders how much knowledge the other students will have. She's so excited to learn so many new and exciting things. She's a bit nervous that she'll be behind the other students, but she has been promised that there will be other students just like her, Muggle-borns who knew nothing about Hogwarts or the wizarding world before they received their own letter.

She knows she'll make friends. After all, the other Muggle-borns will be as anxious as her to learn about the world they have just entered, and she is sure other students who grew up in the world, will want to learn as much about magic as they can now that they're allowed to.

She will no longer be a freak, someone who stands out in every class because she studies and has so much knowledge in her head. Just knowing that soon she will have friends is like a balm to her heart, knowing in just a little while, she will no longer be alone, but she'll have people she can talk to and have fun with.

Hermione can just imagine how wonderful her days at Hogwarts will be – studying in the library, eating meals with friends, practicing magic all day long, hanging outside in the cool air, telling secrets with her friends that no one else knows or could ever understand – it will be endless bliss.

When she gets onto the Hogwarts express the next day, she looks around, but everyone seems to know where to go.

A little bit after the train starts on its course, Hermione looks around, hoping to meet some of the students, so she can compare notes about their knowledge versus her own knowledge.

She places a wide, friendly smile on her face when a bumbling brown-haired boy bumps into her. "Hello! I'm Hermione Granger. What's your name?"

"N-Neville Longbottom," he stutters. He looks around. "I-I've l-lost my toad, T-Trevor. H-Have you seen him?"

Hermione shakes her head, feeling bad for him. "No, but I'll help you look for him if you want."

"T-Thank you."

She nods and starts on her search, and like they say...

The rest is history.
