Jungle High

Prologue: Rare Bird

High school is a jungle.

Birds of a feather flock together.

The females preen themselves to look respectable with their brightly-coloured clothing and their perfectly silky hair - feathers. They squawk, and squawk, and squawk in attempt to capture the male's attention.

The males shave, use axe, work on their muscles and show off in gym class to show the females how their good genes would be passed on to the offspring.

The constant chatter, the will to survive, the horrible feeling of rejected mating calls – this was all found in high school.

And there were some – the prey – that tried to desperately hide behind their camouflage in attempt to survive. This neutral coloured hoody and these blue jeans and sneakers – they blend into the environment don't they? Yes, yes they do. But stealth is also a great thing for survival – only speak when spoken to, only make small talk if the other person is willing, and don't trip over your own two feet and crash into a desk with an open pencil case that would fall off and clatter onto the hard floor like 10 tiny, dull, bells.

But behold! A new animal is entering the jungle! A new species! How rare!

Those eyes? How would my offspring look with those pale purple eyes? The fair skin? How intriguing!

What would it be like if this bird joined our group? Bait! Bait for the males – too many would flock to this group, and only one would be accepted by the bird! And many good specimens would be leftover! We could pick the scraps that this female did not want!

She's not extraordinarily pretty – hair is too long, covering half her face. The clothes are the skin of an animal that does not want to be noticed, and the quiet air about her is more meek and mysterious than showing the will of not wanting to talk.

Oh, the novelty of it all! Perfection! She is intriguing because she is different and new!

We must lure this bird in with grains and berries. Only then would she-

"Tenten-chan!"

The new specimen has sent out her mating call. Several male heads peek up from their desk. Some duck their heads back down and others with careful, calculating eyes, evaluate her in their head.

They put their heads back down. No, not now. Don't want to scare New Bird away.

The bird that is of the jock species smiles as she hears the twitter of New Bird.

"Hinata! Temari told me you were going to our school! This is great."

A miscalculation – the Tenten bird is surrounded by males. The jock species is full of males and scarce females. Of the few females in this species most are already taken. This has led to brave males venturing off and mating with other species – the valley-girls, the cheerleaders, the marthas – but behold! A new female has entered. She is unique, different, a Rare Bird. No doubt the males will be interested - at least for a little while.

But for now, the novelty hasn't work off.

A competition starts – who will become the mate of this Rare Bird?

Pretty odd premise huh? This is actually my first time writing fanfiction in 2 years – to celebrate, I've created a new account in hopes to finish a fanfiction for once. My writing style has definitely changed... Anyway, I hope you'll stick around for the nest – haha, lame – chapter!
