Okay. So this is an EXTREMELY angsty one shot. It came to me while I was listening to the Gotye song "Somebody That I Used To Know" and for some reason, this is what came out. So here we go.

Bert stood in the rain and watched her walking through the park, her bright blue eyes focused on the ground. Not once did her eyes waver from her path and he found this the most miserable part of all. They had been friends once, very good friends who had shared everything together, from jolly holidays to walks in the park to nights up on the rooftops with all of his friends.

But now here she was, acting like they had never been anything to each other at all. His jaw tightened and he gripped his broom a little harder.

Hadn't she been the one to tell him that they could still be friends, even though they weren't romantically involved any more? Hadn't she been the one who seemed to be relieved to have things go back to the way that they had always been and have this little interlude be over?

And yet, here he stood, cut off from her completely. She wouldn't answer his letters, or even respond when he called her name on the street. Now...she was just someone that he used to know. Used to know better than he knew himself.

Maybe he hadn't known her so well after all. If she was really what he thought she was, then wouldn't she have found a way to keep their friendship? He was tired of trying to think back to every word she said and trying to find hidden meanings in them. If she wanted to treat him like a complete stranger, that was her business. He didn't need her love, or her or any of this mess.

As he stared after her, one of the new sweeps came up and also looked in the direction that he was looking.

"Who's that, Bert?" the young man asked curiously.

"Just somebody that I used to know." he replied softly. He would get used to this sadness someday. It's what he would always associate with her now, with this person whose life had once been intertwined with his.

Turning resolutely away, he squared his shoulders. She was just somebody that he used to know.
