More Than Yesterday, Less Than Tomorrow
The darkness was interrupted by a sudden flash of lightning followed by a loud roaring boom. A soon as it stopped another round began. The sound of harsh rain hitting the outer walls and windows echoed throughout the townhouse. It was cool in the bedroom, the heater had shut off earlier in the night, leaving the two people sleeping in the bed to bundle under the covers.
As another flash surged through the room, the man was awoken by his partner's violent twisting and turning. He sat up in the darkness, awaiting more lightning to give him a glimpse of his fiancée. As soon as it did, the man's face twisted with worry.
Whimpers of fear escaped the woman's sleeping lips while she continued to toss an turn. The man laid on his side and slipped his arm over her waist. Soon her movement and sounds ceased and both were peacefully asleep once again.
An hour had yet to pass when Gil Grissom awoke with a start to Sara's violent scream. He sat up to find she had already done so, the continuing lightning showed the tears drenching her cheeks. He wrapped his arms around her, rocking her gently.
"It's okay, Sara, Honey, you're fine. It was just a nightmare," he did his best to comfort her. She continued to cry, her whole body shaking with sobs. Gil rubbed Sara's back until her sobs faded into unsteady, shaky breathing.
"Are you okay now?" He knew the answer before he finished asking the question. Both the truth and what she would tell him. Sara's troubled past was beginning to catch up with her, and it didn't help to be the last victim of the Miniature Killer. Natalie had ruined her life while trying to ruin his. Luckily, Sara was saved in time. It was not her day to die, Gil was eternally grateful for that.
"I'll be fine," Sara lied to him, but Gil saw right through her. He knew not to push her; she had been pushed around enough in her lifetime. All he wanted to do was make her happy; he could barely stand to see her this way.
"This one was different," she admitted, Gil's arms still wrapped tightly around her. More lightning filled the room and Gil felt her tense beneath his grasp. "I was still under the car, but it wasn't Natalie standing above me…it was you…and my father. He kept trying to get to me, but you were fighting him off."
Gil listened intently, detecting sorrow and fear in her sleep riddled voice.
"You were protecting me from him." The two sat against the head board in the darkness for a while, listening to the storm slowly fade out. Just as Gil began to fall back into the depths of sleep, Sara's words awoke him.
"I love you," the fear and sadness was gone from her voice. Compassion and confidence replaced them.
"I love you more today than yesterday, but far less than tomorrow," Gill responded quietly. Sara leaned farther into his chest, not bothering to ask him where the quote had come from. Gil quickly slipped into slumber again with a smile on his face and the woman he loved in his arms.
The End.
