My
Demise
Swirls of sand. Heat of sun. My vision blurred.
I
staggered through the sands. My strength, leaving me slowly, but
quickly. The once gold suit, lay tarnished, beat up, dead. I left it
behind. It was no use in this world of sand; it would only slow me
down. I would overheat; my sweat would be my killer.
The heat
lakes carried on, heading nowhere, and ending everywhere. My mind
thinking water, my body denying it.
Shadows above me. They circled
me, waiting, waiting. Their feast would come. Would I be theirs?
My
hair lay against my back. Cool, and wet.
The mission I took,
was not this one. This was a lie, a trick, a blasphemy. No one was
here. This was all part of their plan. This was what they wanted.
I
could feel my life drifting away. Evaporating into the air, etching
higher into the clear sky.
I could feel their eyes on my back.
Watching my every move. Waiting for it to happen. I knew they were
there, and I wasn't going to allow them to get their wish – not
this time. I could hear their snickering from behind the mounds of
sand. They were laughing at me, at I, the hunter.
I staggered, and tripped. Falling onto the hot sand underneath me. My breath short and fast, failing slowly. My eyelids fell. Closing slowly. My body wanted it to happen, but my heart wouldn't allow it. Death, not here, not now. It wasn't an option.
Placing a finger to my wrist. I felt the blood pumping through my veins. My heart beat still strong. I was still alive. I still had a chance. Though I knew the odds of survival, but I forced myself to think of other things.
I
lifted myself from the ground. Brushed the sand off of me, and
continued with my walk. Once or twice, I saw them run out. Right in
front of me. How could they think I wasn't seeing them? I watched
them. Watched them try not to be seen, knowing they were there. They
sat, talking in low dull voices. I sat, waiting for them to move.
Hours ticked by. The sun set. The cold overtook me.
Who would
have thought, a place so hot, could be so cold. My whole body shook.
I shivered uncontrollably.
"Aghhh!" I screamed.
Nothing would hear my voice. I was alone here, with these 'things'. They just acted like nothing happened.
Their voices trailed off as
my eyes began to close. My body was giving up. I realized nothing
would save me. My mind faded, as did my life.
My body fell,
laying on the now freezing ground. In my last few moments of life,
they disappeared, and it was then that I realized. I was the one who
killed me. Not the pirates. It was me. My mind had given up long ago,
it started showing what I wanted to see to make my want to live just
a little longer.
As the sun rose once more, to make a new day. My frost covered body lay motionless. I was gone. The hunter was dead.
