War is for men.
That is the way of the world; women are all fragile and delicate. The female kind has no place in the midst of battle. They do not deserve to witness the atrocities of war, the brutal murder in battle, the savage euphoria of killing. We bear the burden for them to prevent their pure spirits from being tainted by horrible sights, if even but a moment. What sort of men would we be if we let our wives, daughters, and mothers fight in battle? At least they would survive longer than we would; at least they'd be spared the unnerving experience of witnessing our tragic, bloody, ends.
After all, our demises are inevitable.

Pride.
That's all I can say about my little girl; she's grown more than I could have imagined in my absence. She's been a fighter all her life, but I'd never realized it before.
I do now. Katara has done more than I've ever contributed; she singlehandedly took down Princess Azula, a feat the Earth King's entire guard force could not perform. If she wishes to fight, so be it; I can do nothing but watch as my daughter matures, leaving me behind.
