A/N: A random one-shot I had an idea for while listening to My Immortal by Evanescence...
Disclaimer. I own nothing. Even half the sentences have been taken or adapted from either the books or the film... or songs... or other films :) sorry its so short :P
He wanders the halls of his fathers, thinking of all that he has lost. Thinking of all that they could have had. But it was a dream, and nothing more.
Her final words to him echoed in his mind. 'I would rather spend one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone.' The memory of her tears of sorrow rolling down her cheeks cut into his heart as sharply as the day they had been shed. 'But I cannot. It would destroy my father, and that is too great a price to pay. I have made my choice.'
'I am mortal. You are elfkind. It was a dream Arwen, nothing more.' He had murmured as he accepted their fate, even as his heart curled up and died. And she placed the Evenstar in his hand with a kiss. 'You cannot give me this.' Even as he said the words, he wanted it, to keep, a key to every memory of her.
'It is mine to give to whom I will. Like my heart.' Her eyes glimmered like stars as the memory faded. He clenched his hand around the Evenstar, closing his own tired eyes briefly in pain.
'Let her go'. Elrond's plea. The plea of a father threatened with losing everything, whispered at the back of his mind. 'Let her bear away her love for you to the undying lands, there to be ever-green'. And Aragorn is left with no more than a memory. A memory of his Luthien walking before his eyes, clad in a mantle of silver and blue. A memory sprinkled with the silver tears of the moon.
And bitter will his days be and he will walk in the wild alone. For that is his fate. He is bound by the life she left behind and her presence still lingers in his every thought and haunts his every dream.
He stands on the pinnacle of Minas Tirith and gazes out at all he has gained. But it pales in comparison to what he has lost. Middle-Earth stretches into the distance and for a moment he teeters on the edge of nothingness.
"My Lord?" The real world calls him back and he glances at his sorrow one last time before locking it in his heart and turning away.
Bitter tears streamed down her cheeks as she watched the last glimmers of a dream fade into the sunset. She was doomed to bring one heart to a bitter parting beyond the end of the world. And she had. She had agonised over her choice. Yet her heart had been torn two ways.
One towards her love, for whom she would have lived a mortal life. A choice she would have made a thousand times over. Yet the other was to her father whose words had torn crevasses in her heart. 'Do you not love your father?' He had asked in deepest sorrow. And so she had made her choice.
In the end she chose to save the heart of her father, and let fall the heart of her love. In the end she could not condemn him to a life of eternal sorrow.
Her heart cried out in pain and loss for the life that she could have had. Even now the desolation in Aragorn's eyes as they had said their last goodbyes, as he had uttered the words 'It was a dream Arwen, nothing more', worms its way through her heart, leaving a honeycomb of empty tunnels where the memories of his every smile, frown, touch and kiss, wandered, lost. Where the bliss of their love now retreated, to be treasured, while all else faded into oblivion.
Her tears mingled with the ocean, spiralling into the depths where the love they carried would linger for eternity.
