What If I Hadn't…

DISCLAIMER: I DON'T OWN THE HPVERSE. Sometimes I wish I did that way Hermione and Draco could get together in the upcoming movie, but hey. That's life.

"What if I hadn't been in Gryffindor?" Hermione Granger asked, pillowing her head on Draco Malfoy's chest.

"What do you mean?" he asked, not quite sure where the conversation was going.

"Well, lets say, hypothetically, that I had made it to Slytherin. Do you still think we'd've ended up like this?" she turned her head so she could see him.

"I don't know. Maybe. Something definitely would've happened, as you would still be my intellectual rival in everything. But maybe I'd have to hate you. Especially if you started making Snape like you better."

They shared a quick laugh. "What about Hufflepuff?"

He looked at her with a raised brow. "You serious?"

She made an impatient noise. "Just answer the question."

"Hermione, there's at least some honor in managing to snag the brains of the Golden Trio, even if you are a Gryffindor. But Hufflepuffs are definitely off limits. Besides, you'd never have made that house. You're too smart."

She smiled up at him, affection glowing in her eyes. "Sometimes you can be really sweet, you know?"

A hint of a smile tugged at his mouth even as he pretended to be offended. "Great, now my rep for being a hard ass is ruined, and by my loving girlfriend of all things!"

She rolled her eyes at his dramatics and asked the last question. "What if I had been in Ravenclaw?"

"I think we'd've ended up the same place we are now, only you'd be asking, 'What if I had been in Gryffindor?' And I think I'd have to say, 'I don't know. Why are we even talking about you and switching houses?'"

She nodded, and smiled at him. "That's all I wanted to know."

Now he was curious. "Why? Why are we even talking about it in the first place?"

"Because the Sorting Hat, way back in First Year, said that it would either be Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. I'm happy to know that things would've worked out with you either way."

"What about your friends? Pothead and the Weasel?"

She thought about the question for a minute and shrugged. "I haven't really thought about it. But, I guess we'd eventually become friends, through Luna and Ginny. And circumstances would probably have forced me to save them both when they needed saving. Just like I do anyway."

They sat in companionable silence before Draco spoke again. "You know what, Hermione? I'm really glad that you were put into Gryffindor. No matter what." And he leaned down and kissed her.

I just had to write this one. It was one of those ideas that pop into my head when I eat breakfast sometimes. Like today. Please review and tell me what you think.
