His Biggest Regret

It started with respect.

He watched her handle the men in the division easily, never once bowing to the pressure of the male dominated profession. She held herself with elegance and poise, giving out her orders with the expectation that they would be followed to the letter.

And woe betide anyone who defied that.

He watched her throw everything she had into the job. Her time, her life, everything went into being the best Head of Department she could be. And he wondered often when she had a moment to herself to just be. To breathe. To enjoy a glass of wine.

He wanted that. He wanted those moments. Of course, he found her attractive and often dreamed of her in a carnal way. But he wanted more than that. He wanted quiet evenings without the drama of work or war.

He wanted stolen moments of peace and quiet and lust and desire.

He wanted her.

"We work together, John. It's not a good idea."

He shook his head. "We're professionals, Amelia. We can keep it out of the office. Just one date."

Sighing, she met his eyes. "One date, and I make no promises."

"Deal."

He waited for her. Ten minutes. Twenty. Half an hour.

She never turned up.

It was the next morning despondent and rejected when he arrived at work that he found out the news.

That he was too late.

That she was gone.

She hadn't stood him up.

He laid the flowers he'd bought for their first date on her coffin, a preserving charm keeping them fresh and beautiful.

Silent tears fell from his eyes as he sent an apology skywards. He could have saved her. He knew where she lived. He knew she wasn't the type to back down from her words. How many times had he admired that about her?

He'd failed her.

She would forever remain his biggest regret.
