Never Hurt to Try

Written by Lenny Snippet

That was the seventeenth time this week, sulked Hayate. He looked glumly at the ground as he leaned against the school's building, ditching class to meet up with his friends again. Alas, he was too busy sulking that he never noticed he missed two periods and his friends still never came. He heaved a sigh and tilted his head upward, hitting his head softly against the school's wall.

"Cool Blue Sky…?" Hayate became in wonder as he saw a levitating goose glide in the sky with two humanized legs dangling on the sides. The corners of his mouth stretched into a grin knowing that only his Cool Blue Sky would use the invention.

The person that was sitting on the goose leaned to the side and waved a hand joyously at the person on the ground. Was Cool Blue Sky actually waving her hand to Hayate? Oh, what news! Like a fool, Hayate waved back with a childish puppy-love intention. "Thank you, Hotaru!"

… Wait a minute. Hayate paused in his spot; arm still stretched out with that foolish grin still glued on his face. That voice sounded different. It was high-pitched, full of emotion even—that definitely was not Cool Blue Sky. The grin on his face vanished in an instance and he withdrew his hand quickly, looking around to see if anyone witnessed his idiocy of being love-struck.

His eyes caught a piece of dark fabric hiding behind a tree. Slowly and quietly, he moved to the one that held that piece on them. Whoever that person was, he was going to make them keep it a secret by threatening, as usual. "Come out!" Hayate shouted as he circled around the tree numerous times, following the owner of the dark fabric.

Hayate noticed that the owner's feet were swift, making their move quickly as to not be seen by Hayate. He growled in annoyance and finally turned around but when he did—

Baka!

—He didn't know whether to regret it or to cherish the fact that he did.

The boy fell backwards, landing roughly on the ground. He rubbed his face in pain and he was to the point of crying. His ears caught the sound of a gun being reloaded. With one hand, he covered his face but his eyes stared in awe at the sight in front of him.

"Cool Blue Sky…!"

Baka!

"Stay away from me," the person mumbled and readied their gun again because Hayate got back up from the hit. "If you don't, I will shoot you again."

He grinned and made his way toward the small girl. Once again, she shot him in the face. The pattern returned as Hayate steadied himself once he got to his feet again. The girl narrowed her violet eyes and aimed for his face again, musing if she should hit him somewhere else where it will hurt more since he's getting used to being hit in the face repetitively.

What was going through Hayate's head was the plan to show his affections to the girl he admired. He wanted to sneak his way to the girl and crush (not quite literally, concerning her tiny frame) in his arms, kissing her softly like butterflies. Nevertheless, he couldn't. Well, not if she kept shooting him with her infamous gun.

Hotaru stopped musing for a moment and hit him where she thought where would be best once he got closer to her than before. Once the "bullet" came into contact where she aimed at, Hayate fell to the ground in complete pain, his hands blocking the area between his thighs.

Oh, it certainly hurt to try but try nonetheless.

Lenny Snippet's Notes:

I adore Hotaru as much as Hayate does. :P
