Summary: A bit of a discussion after Prothero's death

"Oh God."
"You're upset."
"Yes, I'm upset! You just admitted to killing Lewis Prothero!"
"I might have killed the Finger men who were attacking you the night we met, but I heard no complaint then."
"No, that is not the same thing!"
"Oh? How are they different, may I ask?"
"You had to do what you did to protect me! Lewis Prothero was a horrid man, but all he did was say horrible things on the television. You can't justify killing somebody because they say horrible things."
"And yet, men and women and children are routinely taken from their homes in the dead of night for crimes of speech. Is that justified, Evey?"
"Don't you put words in my mouth! You know I don't think that's justified! If you had any idea what- look, killing somebody in self defense or defense of another person is not the same as killing some defenseless fat sod who wasn't a threat."
"Evey, listen to me and listen well when I say that that man and everyone like him is a constant, immediate threat to your life, your freedom and your humanity."
"So you're planning on killing more people, then? Everybody who supports the Chancellor? All the party members? What's going to stop you killing me if I say something you don't like?"
"Oh, Evey. You don't know me at all."
"I never said I did. I just know that whatever Prothero did wrong he's not a murderer."
"Oh, you know this for a fact, do you?"
"Well, I know he was a soldier, he must have killed people in battle, but that's different; it's war, not murder."
"Did you think I was speaking of war?"
"Are you going to tell me that he went around killing innocent people for no good reason?"
"You have seen his programme. You're well aware of his philosophy towards those he decided were inferior."
"So he's a horrible bigot. That doesn't make him a murderer."
"You still haven't asked the most obvious question."
"You want me to ask what he did."
"Don't you want to know?"
"I don't know what you could possibly tell me that could justify doing what you've done."
"…
"…
"What if I were to tell you that that man was personally responsible for the deaths of nearly a hundred people and indirectly responsible for thousands more?"
"I don't believe that."
"I've never lied to you, Evey. Not once."
"…I don't know. Maybe you're right and he did deserve it. Does that mean you have the right to punish him?"
"Who else will do it, Evey? There is no such thing as due process anymore. You're young, but surely you remember the days when one was innocent until proven guilty."
"Yes, but-"
"The truth is, Evey, that Prothero committed no crime. A crime is a violation of law, and the law is written by those in power. If the law allows people in power to slaughter innocents and suppress freedoms, then to resist being slaughtered and oppressed is a crime. WE are the criminals, Evey. What does that mean to you?"
"…"
"Evey?"
"…I don't know. I just don't know. I need to think about it."
"Take all the time you need."
