Emma took another drink from her water bottle as she looked over a few more pages from the city's covenant to make sure she didn't fall into any other traps that could be avoided when she heard a beep and then the static over the wallkie talkie. "Emma? Emma, are you there? Over."
Emma slowly reached out towards the device, her eyebrows raised even though she was grateful for the break. "Henry? Kid, you're supposed to be in bed. It's ten o'clock."
There was a silence before there was another beep. "You're supposed to say 'over'. Over."
To this, Emma rolled her eyes. She was reminded of an episode of Family Guy, but she shrugged. "Okay, you're going to get us both in trouble if your mother finds out... Over."
"She won't be up for at least another two minutes, over."
"Then I suggest you say what you needed to say before she comes back." Emma sighed. "Over."
"Meet me after school tomorrow. I have some new plans for Operation Cobra. Good plans, and no playing dirty, because that is how we have to win. Over."
"No playing dirty," Emma reassured him before she continued, "but I am not sure if I can meet you after school unless you meet me at Gran's for a soda or something while I'm on break."
"You forgot to say 'over' again. Over."
"Look, can we not do the 'over' thing? At least not tonight?"
"Okay okay. Oh cripes, I hear her coming!" Emma stared at the walkie talkie for a moment before it beeped again.
"Sherriff Swan-"
"Shit."
"-Say good night to Sherriff Swan," Regina said a second later.
"Goodnight Emma!" Henry called.
Emma wanted to reply in kind, but Regina evidently still had her finger on the talk button, so she had no choice but to listen to the sounds associated with Regina tucking Henry into bed, saying her goodnights, and the light click of what the blonde assumed was the light switch going off. Still Regina didn't let go of the talk button, so Emma listened on as footsteps moved the mayor through her home. After another minute, there was shuffling and then silence before the other woman's voice finally came through. "Now that we're alone," Regina said, her voice now clear in comparison to the far away sound it had earlier when Henry had been caught, "I had a few things I wanted to say to you."
"Here we go," Emma muttered to herself. She expected for Regina to chew her out for being in contact with Henry so late at night, but what she said next surprised her.
Regina's voice was quiet, so quiet that Emma almost hadn't heard her. "Thank you. For saving me. I don't think I ever got a chance to say it."
"Erm- You're welcome." Was all Emma could get out. There was a silence on the other end of the line, and Emma said, "He's not going to get in trouble for this is he?"
"He'll get this back tomorrow after school, if you promise that this stays off after 8:30," Regina replied after a moment.
"I can agree to that. I promise, no later than 8:30. And if he contacts me then, I will ignore it." Emma said.
"Good." The silence that followed was so long that Emma had turned back to her paper work. When the walkie talkie had beeped again, she actually jumped. "Well, Emma, I should let you do whatever it is you were doing and get to sleep."
Emma. Regina had called her Emma. "Yeah, thanks. Good night, Regina."
"Goodnight." With that, the line went silent and remained that way. The thoughts running through the two women's minds on separate parts of the town however, were not as quiet.
