Shuu kissed Hiyoko a little more deeply. He would have suggested they do other things, less innocent things, but they were in the school's infirmary, and the chance of them being discovered was simply too high to risk.
He put his hand on her heart, and felt its steady beat. How he loved the feeling of her heartbeat. He put his cheek on her chest, letting her regain her breath for a moment. To think, if she didn't have a heart, her cheeks wouldn't be so red. She put her warm hands on his cold back, and her heart beat a little faster.
Shuu felt giddy at the thought of picking through her chest. All sorts of lovely blood and gore to play with. Shuu reached into his pocket, long, pale fingers wrapping around the handle of a knife. Hiyoko's eyes were closed. Good. They screamed less if they didn't see death coming.
Shuu inched to the side ever so slightly, so that her stomach was visible. A perfect target. He raised the knife, and was about to plunge the blade into her soft skin when she sighed.
"I love you," Hiyoko sighed. Her breath smelled like tea, and Shuu found himself frozen. For the first time in forever, he felt remorse. He felt hesitation. For a reason he couldn't understand, a single tear fell from his eye and onto her cheek. Her eyes snapped open in surprise as Shuu licked up the salt water. She blushed again, and he smiled, slipping the knife back into his pocket.
Some other time, then.
Author's Note: It would have been rather odd to write this with Shuu still being a bird, so I went ahead and made them both humans. If I write another story in the HB universe, it'll most likely be the same. Ah, the joys of fanfiction.
