Colours of the Rainbow

"Amy, how many colours are there in a rainbow?" Serena asked, staring out the window at the grey skies that imprisoned the sunlight, and kept all but one of the assembled Sailor Scouts indoors. The blue haired girl frowned, not really understanding what had led to this topic of conversation, so different from the last conversation about the monsters attacking the Earth.

"It's difficult to say, Serena. In reality, there are an infinite number of colours of the rainbow, every colour that is imaginable is found in the rainbow. But most people say there are seven colours in a rainbow."

"Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet," Mina chanted. "In that order."

"How do you do that?" Lita asked. "I can never remember what order the colours are."

"There's a little rhyme that I use," Mina explained. "It goes like this, 'Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain'."

"But why are there rainbows? How are they created?" Serena wondered, still staring out the window, searching for a sign that the rain was lifting.

"Well, it has to do with the way the sunlight hits the rain drops in the air," Amy explained. "The sun has to be behind you, and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees before you get a rainbow. That's why you can't see a rainbow from the other side, and there is no way to get to the end of rainbow. Not only do they have no end, but moving would change the angle of the sun, and the rainbow would fade."

Serena smiled suddenly, her entire face lighting up. "I don't think that's why rainbows exist. It might be how we see them, but it's not why they exist." She looked up at the sky, and the one ray of sunshine that had broken through the barrier of the clouds. "I think rainbows are the sun greeting the world after the darkness. It's like the light is saying the dark clouds haven't defeated it, that it is still here and will shine on forever, just like the rainbow that never ends. The sunlight takes the miserable rain and makes it beautiful and full of hope. Rainbows are love, the love of the sun for all who live by its light, hard-fought for, but all the more precious because of that." She leaned against the window and sighed. The three other girls saw the wistful, yet peaceful look on the blonde's face, and knew she was thinking of her own hard-fought for love.

On the other side of town, a dark-haired man watched the rain and thought of the blonde girl he loved. A beautiful arc formed in the air, its vibrant colour and delicate shape entrancing him, reminding him of her. While he loved the rain, its cleansing nature and the life it brought to the earth, there was something about that arc of infinite colour that reminded him that there would always be love in this world, as long as there were people willing to fight for it, just as the light of the sun fought through the clouds to create the delicate rainbow in the drops of the rain.

Darien spun around, grabbing his coat and raced out of his apartment, slamming the door closed behind him. He ignored the rain beating down on his head and ran through the deserted streets, to the love he had fought for, and won. Behind him, the sun broke through the clouds, shining brightly, spreading the colours of its light throughout the world.

Author's Note: I love the rain, but most of all I love rainbows. They remind me of the beauty of nature, and how there is always colour in the world, you just have to find the right angle to view it from. I know this is a really silly story, but I wanted to share what I felt when I looked out my window and saw that arch of colour in the sky. So thanks for reading, and if it strikes your fancy, leave a review. Reviews are like rainbows, the spread the love.
