Jayne Cobb sat quietly in a chair, eyes on the sky, hand moving suspiciously in the bag on his lap.

Serenity and its crew had been parked on this desert rock for four days now, and Jayne was starting to loose his patience. While Jayne Cobb could never admit to liking his job ('cept for when he got to shoot things), he enjoyed his job a hell of a lot more than sitting around this hot, dry planet waiting.

Waiting, Jayne spat a shell into a bucket beside his loop-sided chair; the English language could do without that word. The next person to tell him to be patient and wait was going to find themselves the proud new owner of a hunk of led lodged in their brain. It wasn't like –

"What are you doing?" A voice interrupted his inner monologue.

Jayne groaned, just what he needed, a curious River to drive away the last of his sanity. "What does it look like I'm doing?!" Jayne growled.

River stepped off the edge of the ships ramp and stared up at the sun. After a few silent seconds, she turned and observed him curiously. "Looks like your waiting for your death."

Jayne blinked, stunned by the strange and morbid comment. "Wha'?"

"In the form of Basal or Squamous cell carcinomas," she continued as if her answer had been obvious. "Or," she turned back to the sun, "Maybe Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans."

Jayne baulked at the medical jargon spilling from her mouth. "Uh…"

River rolled her eyes and dropped a while tube onto his lap. "Simon was worried, told me to bring this out for you." A huge grin split Rivers face as she shoved her hand into the bag of sunflower seeds on his lap.

"Hey!" Jayne scoffed, "Sometime you can be so annoying!"

River stuck out her tongue and smiled. But just as soon as the grin had graced her face, it faded and her eyes narrowed as she moved in close, invading his personal space. "You hurt Simon and I will end you."

Another smile graced her face as she spat some shells into the sand and danced away.

Jayne shook his head, as crazy as that girl was; every move she made only endeared her to Jayne more. Picking up the white tube, he turned it carefully looking for the label.

"SPF 45," Jayne read the doctors simple scrawl. "Sure is cute, the little ol' doctor thinking of my welfare." Jayne smiled; letting his thoughts stray back to the night before. The two had lain, devoid of clothes, intertwined on Jayne's bunk, warming themselves with each other's bodies.

Jayne stood and stretched, placing the bag of seeds on the vacant seat. Jayne eyed his crotch, his grin spreading wider, as he noticed his diao standing half-mast.

Placing the tube carefully in his pocket, he headed into Serenity's warm interior. Whistling to himself, Jayne let his mind wander, dreaming of a warm shower shared with a dark-haired beauty. He had spent enough time outside anyways, he grinned to himself, now all he needed was a little attention from a doctor.
