Chapter 1
"Little Miss Sunshine"
The boat was going fast and making her see sick. Candice White Brown was looking at the ocean, smelling the odours of the ocean. She was going to a New life, a dangerous life, during the big war.
- Baby? She heard
- Yes honey, she responded
A nice and tall handsome man was holding her by the waist and kissing her neck. He was blonde, like she was blonde and they made the perfect couple. He was a scientific, studying plants and medicinal plants among other things. He was going to fight in the war because it was his duty, like he thought. His little wifey, had studied to be a nurse and she was now a surgical nurse, much needed in the war because of all the bullet wounds. The man's family was very rich and they were all horrified to see that he had gone to war with his wife. They thought they were both nuts. But his Great Aunt, blamed his wife mostly; she was the devil incarnate who corrupted her grand nephew! But the couple had made up their mind, they wanted to go and help others, the wounded and that's what they did. They were now almost there, they were going in England... in London.
- Honey, he said, you can still change your mind, you can go back as soon as we get there
- Is that what you want to do? She asked
- No, I want to help the wounded…
- Then that's what we're going to do, she said smiling
- We might not come back
- Like we might come back, she said, let's think positive!
- In this awful war, we need all the positive thoughts we can get! And my little Mary Sunshine is just what this war needs!
They burst out laughing, she turned around to kiss him on the lips for a long time. They loved each other so much. They were in this war together.
The boat arrived at Southampton and they took a carriage to London, which took a long time, but they were together and they slept in each other's arms. They got to London at the hospital, they game them their room for married couple. They were hoping to work together, but they were separated, they would see each other only in the evening, in their room.
- Oh baby, she said, I'm exhausted
- Me too, but I'm still very very happy to see you , he said with a smile
- You're not tired?
- For you? Never!
She burst out laughing and she hugged him. They kissed and they went to bed and they made love, like it was the last time, since they never knew what was going to happen to next day. Making love, was good, it was nice and it gave them courage. She had her head on his chest.
- Honey, what happens if I get pregnant?
- We're being careful, baby, but if it happens, then it happens… we're going back to America to raise our child…
- Fine, she said smiling, I love you so much!
- I love you more, he said kissing her passionately
So our young couple, practically newlyweds, would work during the day taking care of soldiers during the war, all day long and then they would go back exhausted to their room, to make love, spend time together, eat together…
Everything was going fine, until one day she went back to her room and her dear hubby wasn't there. She didn't panic, it happens. Maybe he had more work today than usual. She took her shower and she was waiting for him, for their romantic night together. But she waited in vain. She was on the bed waiting for him and she fell asleep. She woke up in the morning, the bed next to her still empty.
- Oh my God! He didn't come back! She said
She got out of bed, got ready and she went to see the administrator of the hospital to ask what had happened to her husband.
- Mrs. Brown, he said, I was going to send for you…
- Why? She asked, where's my husband?
- Mrs. Brown, there's no easy way to tell you this, but your husband was killed in a ambush with the enemy
- What? But he's part of the medical crew! They're not supposed to go after medical crews…
- That's true, but it's the war, there are no rules… I'm very sorry Mrs. Brown…
- No, no, no… NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Candy became hysterical, they gave her sedative to calm, her down and put her to bed. She slept for most of the day and when she woke up, to the cruel reality, she couldn't stop crying, crying and crying.

Anthony's family got the news that he had been killed, but that the bodies was burnt beyond recognition and that it's going to take time to identify them properly.
The memorial service was like a dream for Candy, she barely remembered attending it, or breathing a word.
Candy stayed in her room for over a month, grieving her husband. She had no friends, he was her only friend and he was gone…
She finally got a hold of herself thinking about him.
" He wouldn't want me to feel sorry for myself all day long, there was a reason we came to England and I'm going to continue helping others, she said to herself crying some more, Anthony, my Anthony, I love you so much… I'm going to continue working in your honour."
So Candy got her life back on track, but she had to move, since she didn't have a husband anymore, she had to find a room in town. She asked around and they gave her addresses of some young girls looking for roommates. She went to a café to meet with one of them.
- Hello, said Candy, I'm looking for a roommate
- Hello, said the young girl, what do you do?
- I'm a nurse, and I just lost my husband… I just want a place to sleep when I'm not working nights at the hospital…
- Oh, of course, said the girl, I'm looking for someone calm, a grieving widow is just perfect!
Candy wanted to smile, but she couldn't. She had stopped smiling the day they told her her Anthony was dead. She wanted to die with him.
- So do we have a deal? Said Candy
- Yes, said the girl, my name is Susanna Marlowe
- Candice Brown, you can call me Candy
- Great! I guess I got a new roommate!
- I'll move in today, they need my room where I used to live with my husband…
- Fine, said Susanna, go get your stuff and come and join me here while I eat. I'll take you to the apartment…
- Thank you, said Candy, I'll be right back
Candy went to her place, packed her bags, with Anthony's stuff too and she gave the key back to the supervisor. She went to the café and she found Susanna had ordered something for her too.
- That's really nice of you, said Candy, but I'm not very hungry…
- Come on! Said Susanna, you have to eat something, you're way too tiny! I bet that since your poor hubby died, you haven't eaten a proper meal!
Candy looked at her. She was a nice girl, wanting her to eat.
- All right, I can eat a bit before we leave…
They finished their meal, but Candy had barely touched hers…It was like her throat was clogged…
- Candy, you haven't touched your plate! Said Susanna
- I'm so sorry… I'm just not hungry, said Candy looking down
- It's ok, you're grieving your husband, let's go honey…I'll show you the apartment, and you can rest in your room.
- Thank you Susanna, said Candy
She helped Candy with her bags, and they walked to the apartment. It was not too big, it had a bathroom, two bedrooms, a living room. Candy's room was smaller than Susanna's but it didn't really matter. She put her stuff away and she just went to bed. She heard some noise during the night, but she didn't go out to see what it was. Probably Susanna having fun.
Candy would go to work in the morning and she would come back in the evening, would eat something and just disappeared in her bedroom. The situation with Anthony's body was not fixing itself; they couldn't find his body anywhere, maybe because it was just destroyed into thousands of pieces. That news only made Candy sadder, and she would cry herself to sleep every single night.
Six months after the death of her husband, Candy was still working like an automaton and not smile at all. The little Mary Sunshine was still not back. One night she was off and she decided to stay in the living room and read. She didn't see the time pass. When Susanna came back, later that day, she wasn't alone…There was a man with her, he was carrying her in fact. She was hurt.
- Careful with your foot, said the man, don't hit the wall
- Oh Terry, thank you for carrying me back here
- You're very welcome! Said Terry smiling
- Oh my roommate is up today! Candy! Hi!
Candy stood up, to let her place on the couch.
- What happen Susanna? Said Candy worried
- There was a small accident at the theatre, said Susanna
- At the theatre? Said Candy
- Oh yeah, Candy, I never told you what I do, you never asked, since you're always locked in your bedroom, I'm an actress…
- Oh…, said Candy
- And this is one of my colleague; Terrence Grandchester
Terry had put Susanna on the couch. He took Candy's hand and kissed it…Candy was so stunned that she burst out laughing, to Susanna's biggest surprise! It was the first time she saw Candy smile let alone laugh!
- Aren't you the charming one, said Candy smiling
- You're very pretty when you're laughing, said Terry smiling
Candy burst out laughing again.
- You're an actor too, right? She said, how do I know you're not acting now?
- I guess you don't, he said smiling
Candy looked at him, he was the first person in over six months who made her laugh. He was good for her. He was tall dark long hair and handsome, with blue green eyes.
- Terry, said Susanna, what is your secret? I've lived with Candy for months and I've never seen her crack a smile, then you come along and two seconds later, you make her laugh out loud!
- You hadn't smile in months? He asked Candy
- I lost my husband a few months ago….
- You're too young to be a widow…
- I was practically a newlywed, said Candy
- I'm sorry for your loss, said Terry
- Thank you, said Candy touched
- But life continues, he said, you should smile more, because you're a real ray of sunshine when you do, what do you do in life?
- I'm a nurse, said Candy
- A nurse, you need to cheer up your patients, you need to be little Miss Sunshine for them and give them the will to live
- My husband used to call me "Little Mary Sunshine"…
- Really? Well I'm going to call you "Little Miss Sunshine"…because of the freckles on your nose …
Candy smiled again. Susanna was dying! She finally managed to get Terry in her apartment and he was mesmerized by Candy!
- I'd like that, said Candy smiling, I'm going to let you two talk
She was walking to her bedroom, when …
- Wait! Little Miss Sunshine…I would like to get to know you more, said Terry would you care to have dinner with me tomorrow night?
Candy was stunned. She never dated, she met Anthony, was adopted by his family and she married him… now she was on the market again…and she was a very attractive young woman.
- Dinner tomorrow night? She said looking at Susanna who was sulking; I don't think I can…
- What about lunch then? Insisted Terry, you have to take a lunch break sometimes during the day… where do you work?
- St. Jules Hospital…, she said
- I'll be there around 1 pm to take you to lunch…
- But, I …
She looked at Terry and she felt good for the first time since Anthony died.
- All right! I have one hour for my lunch, wait for me at the nurse's station on the third floor
- It's a date, said Terry smiling
He took her hand and kissed it again.
- It was nice meeting you, Little Miss Sunshine
- It was nice meeting you too, charmer, she said laughing!
Candy went to her room and she felt light like a feather. Was she allowed to have those sudden feelings? For a man she had seen for 10 minutes!
"What on earth is going on? This is all so strange…but he did make me smile, something I haven't' done in a long time… He called me Little Miss Sunshine, he's actually the sunshine of my life at the moment…what about Susanna, if he was interested in Susanna, he wouldn't have asked me out in front of her, they must be friends only…"
On that nice thought, she went to bed and she was thinking about someone else for the first time in a very very long time.
Susanna was I bed sulking. She had brought Terry to her apartment to seduce him and he was attracted to her insipid roommate who decided to smile and seduce her Terry!
"Damn you Candy! I love Terry! How could you do this to me?!"
Terry was on his bed thinking about this girl he had just met. From the moment he saw her, his heart jumped hard and he could still feel it while he thought about her…
"She looked so adorable, with the freckles on her nose. She had just lost her husband. I wish I was there to console her, she must've been heartbroken; I could still feel some sadness coming from her. But from now on, I'm going to be there to help her, to show here that life can still be good and happy with me. Hang in there, Little Miss Sunshine, I'm here now, I'm here to take care of you…I want to be there for you"
