It had not been but a year since the separating of the fellowship, not 10 months since the scorging of the shire; not even 5 months since Frodo went to the undying lands leaving all loved ones behind. It was so familiar though Pippen thought so close yet so far. How could Frodo after all they'd been through simply pack up his stuff and leave him? Pippen could not even begin to imagine. Then while visiting Bag End a strange memory entered his mind that would change his life forever.
Pippen was walking down the road that lead to Bag End. He had taken it so many times yet today it seemed different. The sun was shining as always, the birds chirping in the trees and flowers just in bloom; yet something about being on this road sent chills up his back. Today was different. He came up to Frodo's old house and just stared in complete awe. He'd spent half his childhood here, him, Frodo, and Merry those were the days. He was suddenly obliged to enter, no one had lived their since the Sack-ville Baggins moved out because of a mouse promblem that they couldn't get rid of. He slowly opened the door. As he caught his first glance of Bag End in almost 2 years he couldn't help but let the emotions and memories fill his brain. Until one memory entered his brain that he didn't even know existed, a memory of three little children digging a hole in the backyard and burying a box of their most prized possessions in it. They had dug it right next to the small mushroom patch just in case they should forget where they had dug it. He completely forgot about it. A strange longing to dig it up filled him. It was getting late he would have to wait until morning, but first to swing by Merry's house and tell him.
He walked out of Bag End and started walking towards Merry's house. His walk quickly turned into a run. Finally he was there. He burst right into the door with out even knocking.
"MERRY!" he said.
"Pippen?" Merry answered, "What are you doing here?"
"Remember when we were just tweens and we took up all our most prized possessions put them in a box and buryed them in the back-yard by the mushrooms. Frodo objected he didn't want Bilbo mad at him for digging up the ground. REMEMBER?" Pippen said hastily.
"I-I think so, but what is this all about?" Merry asked.
"I don't know but let's dig it up!" Pippen exclaimed.
"Why? It's just a box of our old "treasures" it wouldn't mean anything now," Merry stated.
"I, I just have a feeling; we need to dig it up," Pippen said.
"Ok, ok Pip I'll help you come over tomorrow morning and we'll head to Bag End tomorrow." Merry said to appease Pippen.
"Great," Pippen said.
"Ok then tomorrow," Merry stated.
"Tomorrow," Pippen said in answer, "and Merry?"
