A/N: I was listening to 'No Reins' by Rascal Flatts when this popped into my head and wouldn't go away. With some prodding by my sister I finally wrote it. Hope you like it.
Disclaimer: I do not own the lyrics for the song or Elizabeth, John, or Simon
She left that loser in a dust cloud
Heart in his hand, chin on the ground
Cried her last tear for that clown
She can see a little clearer now
She said, "Oh, oh I gotta go and find me"
Oh, oh she found the strength to break free
Elizabeth stood on the balcony and closed her eyes, thinking. Simon hadn't wanted to come to Atlantis. Fine then. While it did hurt, she knew she would get over it. She wiped her eyes to get rid of the tears and decided she wasn't going to cry over him ever again.
Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody – no reins
No reins
Opening her eyes, Elizabeth stared out at the sparkling blue liquid that stretched for miles. She thought back to her relationship with Simon. She was never herself with Simon. She hadn't lived her life the way she'd wanted. She'd lived it the way he wanted.
As she thought about this, she kept asking herself why. Then the answer came to her. Because he'd told her he loved her and she'd wanted him to love her forever, believing that she loved him back. Which wasn't true. So she'd stayed that person for many years not even noticing how much unlike her she was being. And right then, she was really glad it was over.
All she's ever felt is held back
She says, "It's kinda nice to hear myself laugh"
She's gonna do a lot more of that
She's makin' plans and makin' tracks
She said, "Oh, oh I gotta go and find me"
Oh, oh she found the strength to break free
With Simon she never got to go on any adventures. And that's who she was, an adventurer. If she wasn't then she wouldn't be the where she was right now. One of the main reasons she hadn't told Simon in person that she was leaving, but instead left him a video, was because she knew that he would have tried to convince her not to go. He would have held her back when she'd wanted to go to Atlantis more than anything. She couldn't have dealt with that and didn't regret her choice.
Elizabeth also realized that she had never truly been happy with Simon. Of course they got along and did stuff normal couples did, and they always had a good time. But he could never make her laugh. Not the way John did. She could be in a horrible mood and John would be able to get a smile out of her. He tried to make her feel better. Simon would just avoid her until her mood went away.
Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody – no reins
Oh, oh she's learnin' how to let go
Oh, oh whichever way the wind blows
Oh, oh she's learnin' how to let go
She was letting go of Simon and it did sting. But she knew that it would be better and she would be happier this way.
Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody – no reins
No reins
Elizabeth smiled to herself then turned around and headed inside. She was ready to start living her life the way she wanted.
A/N: This didn't go quite as I'd planned it, but that's ok. Please reveiw and tell me what you think!
