Alanna stood on the veranda overlooking the sunny countryside, a sad smile on her lips. For the fist time she could remember, her age had caught up with her. Looking at the age spots on her hand, Alanna wondered if she would ever be able to slow down. Sixty-two summers was too old to be teaching swordplay to pages. With the reminder of her age came loneliness. Who would have thought she would have chosen to be alone?

Her smile grew wider. She had accomplished all of her goals. She had been a great warrior and done great things as she planned, only she had never counted on meeting great men along the way...
