Avatar movie Ch1: Fate has other plans
2153 December 30 Earth
It was one of those mornings that her parents slept in and she was up early as can be. Prior to all this the little one had made plans with a friend of her's to go ice skating. So slipping on the snow boots and with those ice skates slung over her back she ran out the door before her parents would realize what had happened. With boots pounding against the snow she ran until she saw blond hair and a laughing face staring at her from an open door. Maria had showed up and the paint named Riverwind was tacked and ready to go.
"
You're late!" Maria shouted as Emily ran pasted Maria and into the stable with a grin as she found her horse. Night was a huge beast with a proud head and a strong body encased in ebony skin. An overall magnificent creature that Emily loved. Smiling, she cleaned him down and tacked him up. " Well let's go then" Emily replied as she rode pasted Maria and soon the two were racing for the trail that was located on the outskirts.
The road that led into the forest was a great place for the girls to relax with their horses. Side by side they rode; laughing at each-others jokes and recalling the old days. Even over the sound of the laughter and the crunching of snow Emily heard a snowplow in the distance. It was a good few miles away.
" Here we are" Maria nodded up ahead.
It was the hill they had been looking for. They had often used it as a shortcut to get to the lake that they ice skated on during the winter. The only way up was a steep path that led to the hill. That was their objective; to get up that hill and to the ice skating rink.
The two at this point had lined their horses up in a row as the path became narrow. Since Maria was up front she went first and nudged Riverwind up the path. He took a few steps then halted and nickered nervously. Maria soothed him with gentle words and a touch to the neck. Still the horse pawed the snow as if he was testing it for something that was not there. Groaning and sighing the girl still urged him onward and onward he went.
Emily was still sitting in the back with Night while keeping an eye on the daring girl. At the same time she would glance back as the snow plow got louder for some reason. It was a little early for them to be out and yet here was one out and plowing the snow that had fallen over night. Yet her head whipped around at the sound of Riverwind sliding a bit back and Maria shouting for Emily.
" How is it?" Emily called up to Maria
"It's fine, just be careful"
Riverwind was almost to the top when something went wrong; horribly wrong. At the bottom, Emily had already started her trek on up to join Maria. She was letting Night take it easy and slow since she had seen Riverwind sliding a bit and feared what would happen to her own. At the half point, Emily stilled as she hear the faint sounds of metal scratching ice and the cry of surprise that erupted from Maria. Had the girls rode more recently, They would've known that the slush from the melting snow had frozen overnight as snow had continued to fall. The snow concealed the ice they were on now. Emily was watching the paint desperately trying to find a purchase on the ice as his hind legs kicking up the ground beneath him.
It was all in vain as his hind legs were failing to find a foothold. His rear end came down and soon he was on the ice with one of his forelegs coming sideways and it looked as if he was taking a bow almost while sliding. Still the girl astride continued to cry out as she suddenly went forward in the saddle; one of her feet coming out of the stirrup in the process. managing to grab a hold of his mane though she looked to Emily and yelled " Move!"
Emily was frozen in time. She could not tell if this was all a dream or reality judging by what she was witnessing. The second scream from Maria seemed to snapped her back into reality. Grabbing the reins she started turning Night down the hill all the while he was tossing his head. He was startled by the screaming and had resisted. Sidestepping he twisted towards the slope until he started to skid. The two were in Riverwind's direct path and Emily wrenched the reins sharply while letting out an alarmed scream
Time seemed to slow as her brain connected the dots right before the collision. Emily heard a faint roar and somehow she knew it was the snow plough from earlier. It was no where near the road they had taken. However her thoughts were jarred at the hard impact of Riverwind slamming into them at full force. It had caused the two to spin around while hitting his withers. She felt herself going airborne yet still Emily stayed on.
As the helpless pair passed Emily, she watched in stricken horror of her friend being flung from the saddle and twisting violently. Yet one of her feet managed to get snagged in the other stirrup as she was being dragged down with Riverwind. In a flurry of movement the doomed riders and their horses tumbled down the road.
