This is my first Elfen Lied fanfic, and please tell me if I got anything wrong, because I just finished watching a few months ago so…. Yeah :P

Chapter I

Kou Hei awoke in her small futon, groggy yet again. She had awoke while it was still dark. She stepped outside of her room and walked outside, like she did nearly every night. She gazed at the moon and the stars, thinking about the mother she never knew.

Her mother died giving birth to her, or so her father had said. Now, she was alone. Her father died on a train. A strange man was there who had spikes sticking out of his head. He killed her father, who was standing there, protecting Kou.

Kou was 19 years old, so she could take care of herself. But, often she would have nightmares about that night on the train. That had happened nearly five years ago. She remembered the amount of blood… the dimness on the train… the evil glare in the man's eyes as he escaped… By the time the train conductors had noticed what happened, her father was already dead.

Kou sat down on a chair and put her head in her hands and cried. She was alone. She never made any real friends. Any friend she made had either moved away or was too scared to be with her.

She never really understood why those friends would stop talking to her. Kou ruled out that having both of her parents wasn't even a reason. But, there was something else. When she got really mad, she would have these tantrums. They always embarrassed her; tantrums are for toddlers. She was too old for them. But, it's like her mind got control of her actions.

Whenever she had those meltdowns, she always got a headache then blacked out. When she would wake up, she wouldn't remember a thing. It always scared her, because soon after, her friends that she was with would have a serious injury around that time. Kou knew it was her, but why would she ever hurt her friends?

The air was deathly quiet. Kou's heart started beating fast. She was running out of breath. She felt as if something was watching her.

She got up and looked around, then heard a banging from inside her house. She jumped, barely wanting to know what the sound was, and ran inside, grabbing a plant that was outside for protection; that was the only "weapon-like thing" she had.

When she got inside, she started turning lights on. She heard the banging again, followed by scratching. It was coming from her parents' old room.

The banging got louder and quicker, and Kou could nearly hear her own heartbeat like it were playing on a stereo behind her. She opened the door and screamed, throwing the plant. She sighed when she realized that it was only her dog, Toku. He ran out of the room, scared by the sudden noise.

Kou sighed and cleaned up the mess she made.

She never went into her parents' room before. She noticed something when she was picking everything up.

It was a big red box, labeled "Photos". As soon as she threw the destroyed plant away, she took it (seeing as she wouldn't be invading anyone's privacy) and went into her room, where Toku was already there, rolling around in her bed.

She flipped through. She saw a picture of her mother, Hama, who was at the beach. She flipped the page and saw a picture of her mother in the hospital. She was holding Kou. But, what Kou saw chilled her. There was a pair of horns on Kou's head, like the ones that were on the strange man's five years ago.
