True Colors

"What's your favorite color?" B'Elanna asked Seven. They were lying in one of Seven's favorite holo-programs. It was designed to look like Unimatrix Zero, the most beautiful place Seven had ever seen. Seven had designed the program and often came here when she felt stressed or sad.

But it had been very lonely coming here by herself time after time. The computer could create people, but they never felt real to her, so she had shyly invited Lt. Torres with her once when the half-Klingon's fiery temper had exploded at her in Engineering and she had wanted to calm down.

She had no idea what possessed her to do it, but B'Elanna had been so shocked that she had followed Seven silently to the serene place. Ever since then, when one of them was upset or stressed out, they called on the other to come with them here.

It was here that these two became friends.

And it was here that they fell in love.

Neither of them had admitted to loving the other except in friendship, but B'Elanna had broken up with Tom and Seven had held her as she cried. They acted like neither had ever had a best friend before, holding hands, kissing each other on the cheeks.

But it never occurred to them that they were in love.

"I don't really have a favorite color," Seven answered.

"Why not? Don't you have a color or something that you like to look at all the time?" B'Elanna was rolled on her side, her head resting in one hand. Seven was laying on her back, her hair down and spread out around her head like blonde water. Seven pointed to the sky and B'Elanna looked up. "Blue is your favorite color?"

"No." Seven said and pointed again. This time B'Elanna looked carefully and saw a rainbow in the after-rainy mist in the sky.

"Rainbow is your favorite color:

"I like the variety." This gave B'Elanna an idea. That night, after hours, she began creating tiny little blossoms in the Hydroponics Bay. Each petal was a different color and on one large rose, that she set in the middle of the bouquet, each petal faded into the many colors of a rainbow. It took her all night to finish, but in the morning she was satisfied.

She walked into Astrometrics with her bouquet and handed them to Seven. "I thought you'd like them." She walked away, her hearts fluttering oddly. Seven's eyes filled with tears that she couldn't explain.

"I love them," she whispered. B'Elanna turned around and smiled.

"I'm glad. You might want to put them in water." Seven nodded and asked the computer to replicate her a vase with water in it. The computer complied and B'Elanna turned to leave. Seven made a realization and a decision, all at once.

"Lieutenant." B'Elanna turned around. "You asked me if there was something that I liked to look at constantly. There is." With that she walked slowly over to B'Elanna and kissed her gently on the lips. "It is you." B'Elanna wrapped her arms around Seven and returned the kiss.

"I love you, Seven."

"I love you, too... B'Elanna."

The end.
