Hi everyone, this is a little one shot based off a headcannon I found on Tumblr. It was submitted to .com.
I do not own the Avengers, they belong to Marvel.
Enjoy!
Steve had no idea how Coulson had found her. He had heard from Dr. Erskine about the dog that they had tested on so that they knew the serum was safe enough for a human subject. What the good doctor had failed to mention was what had happened to the black lab afterward.
That being said, one could imagine his surprise when a package arrived at Avengers Tower containing pet supplies. As he was examining the box and wondering why the heck it was there he felt a very wet, squishy …something pressed against his face. He turned slowly to see a large patch of midnight black, broken up only by two light blue eyes. The two sat there examining each other for about thirty seconds before the dog took the initiative to lick Steve in the face.
"Where'd Fido come from?" Tony inquired. Natasha stood with him surveying the scene as Steve reached around to stroke the dog's head.
"She was the test animal for Erskine's formula." Clint stepped over to the other two Avengers as he explained. "They couldn't euthanize her after they finished their test, the formula worked to well. Your dad had her frozen in nitrogen and placed in a good hiding place. Coulson tracked her down after they unfroze Cap here and arranged for the dog to be given to him as a gift."
"She's very well trained," Steve remarked. He had overheard the conversation and was now carrying the box towards the elevators with the dog following closely at his heel.
The group made their way to Steve's floor. The lab was making her way around the rooms, sniffing everything as she went. The four warriors took the time to admire the grace and beauty of the animal. She padded around softly, making hardly any noise. Her fur was sleek and shiny, completely black with the exception of a spot between her ears where there was a stripe of white.
"So, what are you going to call her?" Steve considered Natasha's question.
"How 'bout Jet?" Clint suggested. Tony shook his head violently.
"No, that's too obvious. How about Blackie?"
"How is that less obvious than Jet?"
"Its too obvious to be obvious." Steve, Natasha, and Clint shot Tony a dubious look.
"Anyway," Natasha piped up, "it's Steve's dog, and he gets to name it."
Feeling the stares of his companions, Steve averted his gaze to the window that overlooked the city towards his old haunting grounds. Then it came to him.
"Brooklyn. Her name is Brooklyn." The lab cocked her head at hearing her new title and bounded over to the captain, tail wagging. Steve knelt down to pet her.
"I guess that settles it," Natasha said bending down to stroke Brooklyn's head, receiving a kiss in the process.
"Brooklyn, it fits," Clint remarked.
"Welcome to the family Brooke."
"Stark, you are not allowed to give my dog nicknames," came the captain's response. Stark pouted slightly, but still affectionately rubbed the lab's head.
"Well, I guess it'll do. Welcome to the Avengers Brooklyn."
A resounding bark from Brooklyn confirmed Tony's statement.
For anyone wondering this is post Avengers, pre Captain America 2.
Hope you all enjoyed!
