Chapter One: A diplomatic mission
Heero crumpled a paper in his left palm as we walked along the college campus to class. His first year in college, and already everything was overly complicated.
Between classes and his job as a military intern, he had to keep himself at a relativley fast pace. The strings of his mind were getting hopelessly tangled by all of the extra aspects of this new life. Of course, it was nothing to the Meteor years. But that was long ago.
Heero furrowed his brow. He couldn't help but think that he was getting rusty. The only steady thing in his life seemed to be Relena.
He could not help but smile a little at the tought of her. So sharp, she was. So intelligent. Well-grounded, beautiful. God, she was beautiful. Like nothing he had seen before.
With a tuck of hair behind his ear, Heero turned the corner and entered his philosophy class.

"And so, in theory, the dog that stands to the bowl would not eat, in paradox. Any questions?"
Heero tapped his pen against the blue-striped white of his notes, listening vaguely. Philosphy was not his strongest subject. In truth, Heero didn't really care to learn it. Where would it get him?
"Psst...Heero...Hello..?" Duo poked his shoulder lightly, trying to gain the prussian-eyed boy's attention.
"...?..." Heero looked up at Duo from his state of quiet thought. Duo passed him a small slip of paper, folded into a square.
"From Lena, lover-boy." He smirked before returning to his balancing act of trying to pay attention, and blow kisses at Hilde without bing noticed. Heero looked towards the object of his affection silently. Relena smiled, stealing a secret glance across the room to him.
"..." Heero unfolded the paper carefully, hiding it underneath a book. Relena usually buried herself in her studies. It was unusual for him to get any attention at all during class. He smoothed the crinkled paper under his fingertips.
"I need to talk with you. Meet me at the campus park after class. It's kind of important..
- Relena
He refolded the note quietly and slipped it into his pocket. Whatever Relena wanted, he wouldn't think of it now. He didn't want to worry. The pen tapped his notes once again.

"Hilde-babe!" Duo grinned and trotted toward the sidewalk opposite him, where Hilde was propping herself against a wall to tie her shoe. She looked up and smiled at the coming Duo.
"Hey. How's it going?" She circled a cotton loop under another and fastened it into a tidy bow. Duo's grin never faded as he reached her.
"It's going." He folded his arms and leaned a shoulder against the brick wall. "You?"
"I'm fine." She switched feet and began to tie the other. "Ballet is fabulous...Mister Robinson is considering giving me the lead in the Nutcracker.." She smiiled, anticipating Duo's response.
"Woah, go babe!" His cobalt eyes were brimming with pride. "I knew your work would pay off." Strong arms wrapped around her stomach and lifted her into the air, spinning her despite her mingled protests and giggles.
"I haven't gotten it yet Duo! I might not!" Duo set her down, her whole body shaking slightly with laughter.
"You will. I know you will. You deserve it Hilde.." A smirk crossed his lips. "And if not, I'll have a little persuasive chat with Mr. Robinson.
He laughed at her horrifed expression. "Ice cream, babe? I'm starved."

What was Relena planning on telling him..? A summer breeze ruffled his dark brown hair. They had been together, officially, for about a year. Was she going to change that? His prussian blue eyes gave away nothing as he approached her.
"Hey Heero. Thanks for coming." He set his books upon a rock and took a seat beside them. She took a breath, and continued. "Heero..I.."
"..." His cold eyes burrowed into her intensely. "What did you want to talk to me about..?"
She hesitated, biting her lower lip.
"Millardo sent me a letter from Wales yesterday..You remember, he left on a diplomatic mission..? Well.." Relena fumbled with her words, twisting her hands uncomfortably. Heero arched an eyebrow, wondering what she was trying to say.
"They...they requested my presence..they would like to have the influence of the ex...the ex 'Queen Relena's' ideas..I have to leave the day after tommorow Heero.." Heero felt an unfamiliar drop in the pit of his stomach.
"..How long?" A look of sadness crossed her face.
"..Six months.." She whispered the words. Heero's heart sank. Six months... Her face was pinkish with blush, her eyes to the ground. Half a year without those eyes... "I'm so sorry Heero.." She looked to him for forgiveness. She was begging with those eyes..
"Relena.." He placed a strong palm against her cheek. Her skin was so smooth..like silk, her skin.. He moved forward suddenly, trapping her rose-petal pink lips in a slow kiss. God, he wished she wouldn't go. But he wouldn't tell her that. He couldn't. She pulled back reluctantly, opening her eyes.
"I'll write you every day..I swear.." He nodded, still showing minimum emotion. She was leaving him for six months.. And 'Goddamn', he thought...'I'm already lonley..'
