Saved by Scarf

The Doctor gasped as the catwalk tilted. He could hear the maniacal snickering of the Master in the background, as he struggled to hang on. Slowly, so as to not upset his precarious hold on the metal catwalk, the Doctor worked his way over to where the cable was connected to the rest of the structure. As the catwalk continued to tilt beneath him, the Doctor carefully worked the cable loose, grabbing it in time before the catwalk disappeared from under him. For a few precious moments, the Doctor remembered all that he'd been through and all of the evil menaces he'd met and defeated during his present incarnation.

"And all of that is about to change." The Doctor thought, before he made a grab for the steel beam adjacent to him. At first he missed, but then he managed to connect and make a tenuous grasp onto the beam. He didn't relax for a second; for even then he could feel his grip slipping. Right when his hands slipped, a miracle occurred. He fell a short distance, but then was stopped in mid-fall by something tugging at his neck and shoulders. When he opened his eyes and looked up, he could see to his astonishment that his scarf had gotten tangled around another beam and had prevented his downward plunge!

"But how did……………..?!" the Doctor wondered, then looked down. There was still a great distance between him and the ground, and he didn't know whether of not his scarf would hold until help arrived. He winced when some slicing pain traveled up from one of his legs. He remembered that, while he was falling, his left leg had met the side of a beam, possibly breaking a bone.

"Just lovely!" the Doctor thought, cursing his rotten luck. But then he realized just how lucky he was; he could have fared much worse from this encounter with the Master. Thankfully, Nyssa and Tegan had brought help along with them as the local rescue units came to get him down. The Doctor grimaced when he felt his rescuer grab him firmly by the legs and got the scarf off from around the Doctor's chest and shoulders. As he was lowered into the rescue basket, the Doctor looked up when he heard something above him. His jaw dropped when he saw his scarf, his old, faithful scarf, come loose from its beam and drift slowly past him to the ground below.

"Faithful old thing…………it's saved my life again!" the Doctor said, with a grin, as the basket came to rest in front of the pale and anxious Tegan and Nyssa.

"That was some miracle, Doctor! Your scarf just reached out and tied itself around that beam!" Tegan said, excitedly.

"Yes. Saved by a scarf!" Nyssa agreed.

"That's not just any old scarf! I'll have you know……………!" the Doctor said, starting to go off on one of his tirades. Nyssa rolled her eyes and exchanged a glance with Tegan. Something told both of them that they had not heard the last about the Doctor's scarf, nor about where and when he'd gotten it. And that was a fact.
