There were dark shadows on his face in the candle light. He was reading letters with blank eyes but his thoughts were somewhere else. This afternoon was so long and stressful. He didn't want to imagine what he would do when he find out what happened. Sooner or later it will happen but he hoped it will be later.
Suddenly the door opened and a soldier ran to his table.
„Sir! Sir!" the man breathed hard because of the running.
„What happened?"
„It's a… haaah… a French! I have never seen a French this angry like him before! He wants to see you, sir! The others are trying to stop him but…"
„WHERE IS SHE!" came an echoing angry shout from one of the not so far corridors.
The man sighed.
„Leave" he said to the soldier.
„But sir…"
„Leave!" he repeated. „Or you want to be teared apart by an angry French?"
„Uhm… No sir…"
„Then go!" he ordered him. The soldier nodded and left the room. He didn't have time to close the door behind him because the angry French man arrived. He really looked angry. He could almost kill with just his eyes.
„England…" he hissed when he stopped in front of the table.
„France" said England. Oh, why did he have to think about it?
„Where is she…"
England sighed and stood up.
„Follow me."
They didn't say anything to each other for a while just when they started to walk up on the stairs.
„How could you…" started France. „How could you let something like this to happen…?"
„I wasn't there."
France grabbed England's shoulder and pushed him against the wall.
„Is it usual in England to let the prisoners jump out from windows?!" France shouted. „Were your soldiers sleeping or what?!"
England didn't say anything. He would just make things worth if he did. He just looked into France's eyes with his honest ones and waited.
After a few moments France released him and stepped away. England didn't move for a while then he continued theire walk. France followed him.
Soon they arrived to a door. England entered with France behind him and walked to a soldier halfway in the corridor.
„Open the door" England ordered the soldier. The soldier opened it and stepped away. England stepped away too to let France enter the room.
For a few moments France hesiteted then entered. When he noticed the motionless form laying on the bed he ran there and fell on his knees.
„Jeanne! Jeanne!" he called the sleeping girl. At first it didn't seem she heard anything but after a few moments she opened her eyes.
„Fran… cis…" her voice was powerless but happy. France laughed a little and took Jeanne's hand.
„Oui cherie… Je suis là… Francis est là…"
England watched them for a while then turned to the soldier.
„Lock the door and step away. Give them some time alone."
The soldier nodded and locked the door. Then he went to the end of the corridor and sat down on a chair.
England sighed and went back to his office. Ha hated France but knowing how he loved this mortal girl made him feel sad.
