I walked along the catwalk barefoot. I'd seen my sister do it every day and wondered how she could stand it. It was cold and dirty. It felt like a very intamate thing to do as well. My sister touched the ship itself with her bare feet as if she were one with it. I had hoped to gain perspective into my younger sister by doing this, but it only caused more questions to flood into my mind.
I made my way across the catwalk and toward the eating area. I was hungry for something small. Upon entering, I was suddenly wishing I had gone back to my room with a rumbly stomach. I frowned and sauntered in anyways. Jayne sat at the table polishing his knife collection. Great.
"Enjoying your favorite hoby I see. Sitting around doing...nothing." I spat at the intimidating older man.
"You're not doin' nothin' either." Jayne said, glaring at me as I walked toward a box of food the others had picked up last week, which was mostly canned food and fruit. "Uh...whatever ya do, don't touch my soup." Jayne grunted as he pollished a large knife.
"Sure thing." I said with a Chinese curse under my breath.
"Mumblin' over there, Doc?"
"No...just looking for something to eat..." I grumbled and thought of throwing a can at his head.
I shruged and looked around for some fruit instead. I finally decided on a couple of oranges. I glanced at the table where Jayne sat, paying me no mind. I looked toward the exit where I had just come out of.
"You can eat them here, I won't bite," Jayne barked, which made me jump.
I spun and glared at Jayne. What was his deal. He wasn't usually so nice and certainly didn't like--well--anyone. He kept to himself for the most part. "Uh, thanks..." I finally said, and sat down accross from him.
I picked at my orange, trying to rip at the skin. I looked up to see a blade in my face. I glanced at the blade and at its owner. Jayne shook the blade at my face.
"Its for your gorram orange." He shook his head and droped the blade in front of me. Jayne was an enigma of a man. I figgure he's only being nice because of the captain. Mal seemed to be the only person who could control Jayne.
I took up the knife and knicked one my oranges and started taking the skin off. "Thanks..." I said as I nervously ate my orange.
"None needed, Doc." Jayne said as he retrieved his knife and started cleaning it again. "None needed..." Jayne repeated.
I know its crazy, but I swear I saw Jayne smile.
