Disclaimer: I don't own Les Miserables. Deal with it
"How do you do it," a man asked Valjean.
"Do what," Valjean asked.
"You are so patient with your daughter," the man remarked, "and she has been fussy and didn't obey you several times today."
Valjean watched Cosette affectionately. She was getting over a cold which was the reason for her fussiness.
"You know a few licks would cure up the case of disobendance imedately," the man said.
"She's just a child," Valjean replied, "and I was once in her shoes. I was not a child but I had quite a bitter root planted in me because of something I had gone through. A dear friend of mine granted me so much. It was thanks to him I maintained my freedom and he showed me patience. I met him twice but he impacted my life forever."
"Oh," the man said, "I didn't know"
"I didn't expect you to know," Valjean replied. He saw Javert.
"Cosette," he told her, "We must go now"
"Coming paapa," she said and got up to follwing him.
