Reid often wondered if all the emotions were just the same feelings under different titles. For example, joy. Wasn't joy just another word for happy? And despair really sadness? Reid thought so; joy and despair were just fancy names to make the so called feelings sound more prominent.
And why did he think this?
Because in the end Reid couldn't bring himself to believe that emotions weren't illusions and that people in the world were more complex than just happy or sad. Believing otherwise only brought him pain and Reid already had too much of that to bear; Tyler had left, Caleb was broken and Pouge was never there for him.
He had to believe emotions were illusions.
Or Reid knew he would fall apart.
