A Lullaby for L
By: Sparxyu
L woke up in a room that was filled with flames. They covered the walls, the floors, the ceiling, everything.
"Mommy!" he cried out. "Daddy!"
He received no answer. But suddenly, his mother and father were rushing toward him. His mother scooped him into her arms so they could escape to safety.
L soon found himself falling from her arms as an enormous demon made from flames ripped her away and snatched up his father as well.
They were tortured before the boy's very eyes and then the demon crushed them, killing them both.
L rushed out of the burning building, his small body wracking with sobs as he sat down on the steps to mourn.
L felt someone shaking his shoulder. He heard someone calling his name. As he opened his eyes, he saw none other than Watari sitting on his bed.
"Another nightmare?" the old man questioned, scooping the small boy onto his lap.
"Uh-huh," L replied shakily, picking up Syrus, his stuffed, black Akita, from next to his pillow. He started to cry.
"Oh," Watari said gently. "Come on, I know something that might help."
"Okay," L replied hesitantly, wrapping his small fingers into Watari's grasp.
Watari led him into the parlor of the orphanage. A small, baby grand piano was located in the middle of the room, next to the fireplace. He spread a small, light blue fleece blanket on the floor and motioned for L to sit.
L sat and listened as Watari played a haunting melody on the piano. The young boy recognized it as a song called Victor's Piano Solo from the movie, Corpse Bride. Curling up with his arms around his dog, he listened carefully and was soon asleep, spread out on the blanket.
As the song came to an end, Watari looked down upon his little charge. Smiling at L's sleeping form, he tucked the blanket around the boy and scooped him bridal style into his arms and carried him back to the room he shared with the other children.
Laying L gently into his bed, Watari affectionately ruffled the boy's hair and kissed his forehead. "Sweet dreams, little one."
The end.
