Automatic Joy

One Shot

"Okasan!"

"Yes?"

"I want that," then the little girl pointed the little doll dancing.

The little girl's mother looked at the direction where her daughter is pointing. She smiled as she looked at the little doll. After awhile it stopped dancing

She looked at her daughter then saw her daughter's disappointment.

"Okasan why did it stopped dancing?" the little girl asked.

"Maybe it's tired," her mother said.

The little girl made a whining sound, "I want to watch it dance."

"Okay okay. Just one more time… okay?" her mother said, knowing that they wouldn't leave that spot until the little girl get what she wants.

Her mother inserted a coin inside the doll and turned a knob clockwise.

Then the doll came to life and pure joy was seen in the little girl's eyes.

"Tomoyo… let's end it."

"Eh?"

"I want to end our relationship," the boy in front of Tomoyo said.

Tomoyo's eyes widened; tears are threatening to fall.

"Why?" she croaked.

"I feel empty…"

It felt like an arrow piercing your heart, shredding it into pieces… crushing it like there's no tomorrow. She was paralyzed, her legs couldn't move… she felt numb.

Tears were silently falling…

"Tomoyo… don't make it hard for me."

"Then don't leave me."

"I have to."

"You're such a liar! You promised me that you'll love me forever!" she shouted… trying to remove all the hurt inside her.

"I know I did… I don't intend to break that promise."

"LIAR! I HATE YOU!" then with that she slapped him then left.

---------------------------------------------------------

She walked and walked… with no direction at all.

Then she stopped then sat on a bench. Tomoyo looked at her feet, her hair covering her face then started to cry.

-Laughter-

She looked up then saw it. A person painted white stood still on a column in front of her. Some kids were laughing.

She just looked at him. Amazed.

Then one of the laughing children placed a coin inside a little box in front of the column.

Music started to play and the person in front of her started to move. He jumped down and then took a flower and gave it to Tomoyo.

Then the person went back to his post as if he was a statue.

Memories from her childhood started to come back. She smiled even if her eyes were crying. She remembered how coin operated dolls amused her and this guy reminded her of one.

The day broke and the moon came. The children were gone and the statue was still there. The statue jumped down again then sat next to Tomoyo.

"You've been crying for awhile there," the statue guy said, "So… did I manage to lighten up your mood?"

Tomoyo nodded.

The statue guy smiled the stretched. "Aah… that's what I like about this job."

"What?"

"Cheering people up. Even if it's tiring to act like a statue all day. The name's Eriol btw. You?"

"Tomoyo."

Eriol knelt down in front of her then kissed her hand as he said, "A pleasure to meet you. Now if you excuse me, I need to return to my post."

Then there it was…

A coin operated boy…

That gives automatic joy
