Blood-soaked roses, entwined together,

Revealing the sadistic nature of man,

Whose own thoughts, he cannot control.

Madness haunts him, plagues him,

Tearing away every last bit of sanity,

Until there is nothing left,

Only blood-soaked roses, entwined together.

That was all that was left of the scene. No body, no weapon, no evidence. Just two roses, twisted around each other, dripping cold, precious blood. It was 12:01 am when the crime was first reported. We were on the scene by 12:13 am. We entered the door and proceeded into the one room apartment. As you inhaled the air in the area, you could literally taste death, though it was overcast with the burning scent of bleach. The assailant had fled, no doubt. They had done well not to leave anything behind. This was probably not their first time. We had no knowledge of anything that could possibly lead us to justice. We only knew that a woman had lived in this apartment and that she was soon to be evicted. We did not know her name, for there were no witnesses. That is what we were told, but people around there lived by their own rules. They knew not to interfere; that's rule number one. Even if it meant saving someone's life, they dared not break the code. We were on our own. She had not been seen for days, but we knew not to narrow our vision so quickly. We first must test the blood that drenched the roses to get a possible idea of who the victim was. This case was hard on all of us working there that night. We all felt the terror the victim must have endured before their life had been forcefully taken.

This crime scene had not been anyone's first assignment; we were all veterans. We had all seen horrors that one would think much worse than this. We had seen blood spattered around every wall in a house, slowly seeping down into the red-stained carpet at our feet; we had seen bodies decapitated and dismembered, lying around in posed positions for someone's sick fantasy to be realized; we all had seen the insanity and pure evil of a serial killer protruding from their eyes as they stared into yours, revealing the dark creature within. But this simple display left in the middle of the floor for all to see was more chilling than anything I had bare witness to. This was the start to a new investigation.
