Missing you
Jake and Helen are divorced. Today, he knocks on her door after 10 years.
The house was quiet; the dim sunset light slipped through the curtains staining with yellow the sweet smell surrounding the room. Two silhouettes sitting on the kitchen table shared a cup of coffee.
-I hoped it wasn't too late, but I guess it is uh?- He asked playing with the spoon on his cup
-I waited for 10 years but you never came- She caressed his hand
-Stupid me (sigh) …you know, I once dreamed that you and I were going to grow old together, like people in the movies-
-I did too…I still think about it sometimes, but it's too late now, I can't just turn back time you know, I'm a 60 year old now and I build a life after you left me - Her eyes filled with tears
-Helen, I… I can't change how you feel, or what I did, I was so stupid, and I promise I won't stay long, but before walking out of your life again, there's something I want you to have-
He searched his pocket and pulled out a box of matches, it was old and wrinkled
-I don't understand- She said after the little wrinkled box was placed on her hands, his were still holding them
-Many years ago, I met an old man in New Orleans who gave me this after hearing my dull story, he took my hands and said "A generous love always has his will prepared" and added that this little box was to save my love for you, because I had lost the one you felt for me; he asked to give it back to you if I ever had the chance, so (sigh) …here it is, my heart, soul and love are in it, I hope you can find forgiveness for me
She held the box tight between her hands, he then leaned, kissed her cheek and walked away
-Jake wait-
He didn't turned, and she noticed how his hair had turned gray
-Nemer wrote that about love, he was talking about giving your love to someone who doesn't love you back; that's why I buried my feelings for you, I went from having everything I wanted to nothing, and now I have what is best for me, peace and solitude, which is why I forgave you a long time ago (sigh) …but-
She whipped her tears and left the cold coffee on the table
-I must confess Helen that; there was a little tiny part of me that thought you would still love me, I guess, that's what happens when you day dream-
Helen walked across the room and hugged his back, he turned and with the sweeties smile she placed the little box on his hands
-You said your heart and soul are in here; well, now mines are next to them. My sister always said I was a fool for loving you and I guess she was right, because I do, I always did and I always will,
-Helen, my dear Helen, can you please give this fool another chance to honor my promised of making happy until the end?-
They both cried, he brushed his forehead against hers
-I do my dear old Jake, until dead do us part-
A few days later, they decided to share their new happiness. That morning came with parking cars, Jake and Helen heard their daughters and grandkids voices coming from the front of the house; they kissed, smile and continued to dance while getting the breakfast ready. They were once more a family.
